Lady Pios edge Jamestown

The Alfred State College women's basketball team squeezed past Jamestown CC 50-45 in a game where neither team could get the offense going.  ASC improves to 13-6 (4-2 WNYAC) on the year while JCC falls to 12-10.

Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) and Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) combined to score 36 of the Lady Pioneers 50 points on the day.  Smith recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds while McLaughlin finished with 16 points. 

Lacey Grove led the Jayhawks with 13 points while Kari Barmore finished with 11 points and 12 boards.

Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) led the Lady Pioneers with 14 points while Anthia Smith chipped in 12 points.  The Lady Pioneers were held to 33.3% (17 for 51) shooting and turned the ball over 30 times.

The Alfred State College women's basketball team bounced back from their first WNYAC loss on Tuesday with an impressive 81-31 victory over Niagara County CC on Thursday evening.  ASC improves to 12-5 (3-1 WNYAC) with the victory.

McLaughlin Named National Player of the Week

Alfred State College sophomore forward Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) has been named the NJCAA Division II co-player of the week.  McLaughlin shares the honor with Megan Waggoner (Johnson County CC).

McLaughlin led the Lady Pioneers to 2-1 record from January 20 to January 26.  During that period she averaged 29.7 points per game, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists.

Both Basketball Teams Receving Votes in National Poll

Both the Alfred State College men's and women's basketball teams received votes in the NJCAA Division II poll released this morning.  This is the first time this season either team has been in the poll.

The women's team came into the week with a 11-4 record.  They are led by Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville).  McLaughlin is averaging 21.6 points per game while her teammate Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) is averaging 16.7 points and 13.9 rebounds a game.

The Alfred State College women's basketball team suffered their first WNYAC loss of the season, 73-53, to #10 Genesee CC.  The loss drops the Lady Pioneers to 11-5 (2-1 WNYAC) while the Lady Cougars improve to 17-2 overall.

McLaughlin's 30 leads Lady Pioneers to victory

Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) was 10 for 23 from the field and 10 for 14 from the foul line as Alfred State defeated Mercyhurst North East 74-63 in their Western New York Conference opener.

McLaughlin finished with a game high 30 points and added seven assists and five rebounds.  Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) recorded another double-double with 18 points on 7 for 11 shooting and 10 boards.

Sarah Flint (Westmoreland) added seven points while Sherelle Brooks (Elmira Free) finished wiht six points.  ASC shot 42.9% from the field and 70.8% from the foul line.

The Alfred State College women's basketball team fell 52-50 to Medaille College JV in their first contest of 2008 and their first contest in over a month.  Medaille hit two foul shots in the final ten seconds to break a 50-50 tie.

Athletes Back on Campus

Alfred State College athletes are back on campus preparing to begin play in 2008.  The men's and women's basketball teams, the wrestling team, and the swimming team began practicing on Sunday while the Indoor Track & Field team returns to campus on Thursday.
