Wrestlers Battle Tough in 2013 Opener

The Alfred State wrestling teams battled tough but fell twice as they opened up 2013 at the Alfred State Duals. They opened the day with a 27-24 loss to Penn College of Technology and then fell 42-16 to Bergen (NJ) CC.

Pioneers Can't Overcome Early Hole

Fueled by three forfeit victories in the first five matches, Mercyhurst North East jumped to a 25-0 lead en route to a 37-16 WNYAC dual meet victory over Alfred State.  The Pioneers finish the 2012 portion of their season with a 1-3 overall mark and a 1-2 WNYAC record.

The Pioneers earned victories in three straight matches after falling behind.  Josh Simons (Campbell Savona) earned a pin at 165, Connor Fox (Midlakes) earned a major decision at 174, and Josh Lord (Owego Free) earned a forfeit victory at 184.

Niagara Downs Alfred on the Mats

Niagara CCC defeated Alfred State 50-0 in a WNYAC dual on Wednesday evening. The win improves Niagara to 3-0 in the WNYAC while the Pioneers are 1-2 overall and 1-1 in WNYAC play.

Niagara earned victories in all nine of the matches wrestled.  The 184 and heavyweight matches were the most competitive with Conner Fox (Midlakes) falling 5-3 to Brooks Boyle at 184 and Dan Ognibene (Alexander) falling 3-1 in overtime to Max Antone.


Alfred returns to action next Wednesday when they travel to Mercyhurst North East for a 7 p.m. match.

Witchella and Fox Named Athletes of the Week

Haley Witchella (Oxford Academy) and Conner Fox (Midlakes) have been named the Alfred State athletes of the week.

Haley Witchella (Oxford Academy) and Conner Fox (Midlakes) have been named the Alfred State athletes of the week.


Witchella wins the award for the second time this winter following a solid week.  She had 29 points, 16 rebounds, six blocks and five steals in a 66-62 victory over Penn College.  She then had 22 points, 23 rebounds, five assists, and three blocks in a 65-50 win over Finger Lakes CC.  She has recorded double-doubles in the Lady Pioneers last six games and has seven on the season.


Fox Finishes 4th at Niagara Open

Conner Fox (Midlakes) finished 4th in the 174 lb. weight class as Alfred State competed at the Thunderwolves Open at Niagara CCC.

Fox lost his first match of the day to the eventual champion but rallied to win four straight matches to earn a shot at 3rd place.  Fox pinned Shane Crawford (Grand Valley State) in 4:15, defeated Brooks Boyle (Niagara CCC) 3-2, pinned Andrew Daigle (UMASS) in 2:08, and defeated David Lyons (Niagara CCC) 6-2 to earned a shot at 3rd place.  In the 3rd place match he lost a hard-fought 8-4 decision to John Brabon (Niagara CCC).

Pioneers Compete at NYS Championships

The Alfred State wrestling team finished T-18th at the annual NYS Collegiate Championships held at Cornell on Saturday.  The tournament features wrestlers from every college, NCAA DI, DIII, and NJCAA, in New York that has a wrestling program.

Kyle Reynolds (Pine Valley) was the lone Pioneer to earn a win.  He defeated Patryck Kopczynski (Hunter) 10-2 in a consolation match in the 197 lb. weight class.

The blue & gold finished with 2 points on the day.  Cornell won the team title with 183.5 points on the day.

The Alfred State wrestling team defeated Jamestown CC 25-20 in their season opening WNYAC match.

The Pioneers jumped out to a quick 18-0 lead with forfeit victories at 184 (Josh Lord - Owego Free), 197 (Travis Harvey - Alfred Almond), and heavyweight (Daniel Ognibene - Alexander).

Wrestlers Open up Season at Ithaca

The Alfred State wrestling team opened up the 2012-13 season competing at the competitive Ithaca Invitational over the weekend. The Pioneers finished 9th in the two-day competition.

Josh Lord (Owego Free) was the lone Pioneer to earn a pin in the competition as he pinned Christopher Brothers (Oswego) in a 4:09 in a consolation match.  Lord finished 1-2 in the 165 lb. weight class.
