Boyd Named Coach of the Year

Gina BoydAlfred State College women's basketball coach Gina Boyd has been named the Region III Division II Coach of the Year.  Boyd led the Lady Pioneers to a 17-9 record and the #2 seed in the regional tournament.

Boyd wins the award for the fifth time in her 18 years at the helm of the program.  She currently has a 277-185 (.600 winning percentage) record at Alfred State.

Smith Named Player of the Year, McLaughlin & Carr named All-Region

Lady Pioneers fall in Semis

The Alfred State College women's basketball team shot just 24.7% from the floor and fell 56-52 to Jamestown CC in the Region III Division II Tournament in Buffalo on Saturday.

JCC led 32-25 at half and held a ten-point lead in the 2nd half before the Lady Pioneers went on a run to close the gap.  Jamestown led by two in the final seconds and Alfred went to the line with a chance to tie the game but missed both foul shots.  Kari Barmore hit two foul shots to seal the victory.

Lady Pioneers seeded #2 in Regional Tournament

The Alfred State College women's basketball team has earned the #2 seed in this week's Region III Division II Tournament.  The Lady Pioneers have earned a bye and will play the winner of the #3 Jamestown CC/#6 Niagara County CC 1st round match-up.

ASC enters the regional tournament with a 17-8 overall mark and a 8-2 record in Region III Division II play.  They downed both Jamestown (84-71 on January 26th and 50-45 on February 5th) and Niagara (81-31 on January 31st and 70-53 on February 23rd) twice during the regular season.

The Alfred State College women's basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a 70-53 victory at Niagara County CC.  With the win the Lady Pioneers improve to 17-8 (8-4 WNYAC & 8-2 Region III Division II).

Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) and Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) each finished with 21 points.  McLaughlin was 8 for 13 from the field while Smith recorded another double-double by adding 13 rebounds.

Kristin Abbott (Webster Thomas) finished with 10 points and six boards while Sherelle Brooks (Elmira Free) added five points and 10 assists.

The five seniors at Alfred State College made their last home game at the Orvis Activities Center a memorable with a 64-59 victory over #9 Genesee CC on Thursday evening.  With the win the Lady Pioneers improve to 16-8 (7-4 WNYAC & 7-2 Region III Division II) while the Lady Cougars fall to 20-4 (8-3 WNYAC & 8-1 Region III Division II).

Mercyhurst North East rallied from a 15-point second half deficit and defeated Alfred State College 65-63 in overtime.  A-State falls to 15-8 (6-4 WNYAC & 6-2 Region III Division II) while Mercyhurst North East improves to 12-15 (5-6 WNYAC).

The Lady Pioneers led 29-22 at half but pushed the lead to 43-28 with 11:33 remaining.  MNE went on a run and eventually tied the game at 54-54 with 1:55 remaining.  The teams traded baskets and turnovers in closing minutes of regulation.  The Saints had the final two shots in regulation but couldn't capitalize.
