Educational Foundation of Alfred, Inc. continues support of students through work-grant program

The Educational Foundation of Alfred, Inc., annually provides $10,000 to Alfred State students through its work-grant program, allowing students who are ineligible for Federal College Work-Study funds to find employment on campus.

The Educational Foundation of Alfred, Inc., annually provides $10,000 to Alfred State students through its work-grant program, allowing students who are ineligible for Federal College Work-Study funds to find employment on campus. The grant is renewable on an annual basis.

Additionally, departments within Alfred State can request student workers with specific skills and the work-grant coordinator attempts to meet those needs with appropriate student assistance.

Educational Foundation of Alfred, Inc. assisting students through peer tutoring support

Since the 2010-2011 academic year, the Foundation has provided $5,000 annually to the college’s peer tutoring program. As a result, the program has fulfilled more than 610 student requests over the last four years, providing more than 4,910 hours of support.

The ongoing support of the Educational Foundation of Alfred, Inc. has greatly contributed to student success at Alfred State through a generous annual donation to peer tutoring.

A pair of Alfred State College (ASC) financial planning majors were among just 54 students from throughout the nation who recently attended TD Ameritrade’s 2018 National LINC Conference in Orlando, FL.

Held annually, the conference invites schools with Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Board Registered Programs to attend. This year, Alfred State was one of 27 colleges represented, as Madison Webster (Painted Post) and Adam Wilkins (Rochester) participated in the conference.

Dr. Kellogg authors article on spy novel

The article, titled “Philip Wylie's Superspy,” discusses a spy novel written by noted writer Philip Wylie (1902-1971).

Dr. Richard Kellogg, professor emeritus of psychology at Alfred State College, is the author of an article appearing in the most recent issue of Paperback Parade, a quarterly journal for readers and book collectors. The article, titled “Philip Wylie's Superspy,” discusses a spy novel written by noted writer Philip Wylie (1902-1971).

Wylie's book, “The Spy Who Spoke Porpoise” (1968), captures the fears and anxieties associated with an era termed the “Cold War.” The plot involves a Russian scheme to conceal nuclear submarines in underground caves off the shores of Hawaii.

The School of Arts and Sciences will celebrate Black History Month with the showing of this powerful, contemporary film. Based on James Baldwin’s life and writings and directed by Haitian-born, renowned filmmaker Raoul Peck, the film centers on the murders of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Based on James Baldwin’s life and writings and directed by Haitian-born, renowned filmmaker Raoul Peck, the film centers on the murders of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Through film and television outtakes, the director traces the historical persistence of racism in America from slavery to the present day.

Digital media and animation students study in Tokyo

Over winter break, Alfred State College students of digital media and animation (DMA), along with Associate Professor Jeremy Speed-Schwartz, explored art, cinema, and animation in Japan as part of the college’s Studio Tokyo program.

During the two-week experience, 18 students collaborated with Meiji University Professor Kentaro Fukuchi and his digital arts students. According to Speed-Schwartz, the group was invited to Fukuchi’s lab on the Nakano Campus of Meiji University to share their projects and see work from his students, including virtual reality and 360-degree video work.

MacKenzie Makeover highlights list of campus upgrades

In MacKenzie East, students are enjoying the newly renovated suites that encompass entire floors of the tower, including semi-private lounges, kitchenettes, and study areas.

Students who recently returned to Alfred State for the start of the spring semester were greeted by the sight of some outstanding renovations to the MacKenzie Complex, as well as several other impressive additions around campus.

Student scores big with role at IIHF World Junior Championships

Cassidy, center, with some of the officials“Being able to experience and work behind-the-scenes of such a prestigious event opened up many opportunities,” Cassidy McCourt said. “As a host, our jobs began before the tournament did. It was our job to make sure everything ran smoothly and everyone adjusted well to being in Buffalo.” 

While she may not have laced up her skates, Alfred State’s Cassidy McCourt had an important role to play at the 2018 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championships.

Held in Buffalo from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5, the event featured the best men’s players under the age of 20 from 10 nations, including the United States, Canada, Belarus, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Finland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, and Slovakia. This was only the fifth World Junior Championship to be played in the United States and the second time it has been played in Buffalo.
