Class with Carrie

Dr. Carrie Cokely has attended a wide variety of classes ranging from automotive, botany, estimating, HVAC, and nutrition during her first semester on campus.

Alfred State Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Carrie Cokely started at the college this summer. In an effort to fully immerse herself into the hands-on education taught at the college she has been joining classes on both the Alfred and Wellsville campus.

Open Door – The Cultural Life Center is for YOU

“Our place is what I call a third space. It is not a classroom space nor a residential space, but it is a gathering space. A student can just come in and sit and talk with other students. Our cultural life ambassadors do programming for the whole campus and lots of their work centers around awareness of different identities and different cultural moments.”

Cornelius joins the Education Foundation Board

The Educational Foundation of Alfred, Inc., a private foundation representing faculty, staff, and friends of Alfred State College (ASC), recently added Justin Cornelius to their board. Kishan Zuber, the college’s new Vice President for Enrollment Management, has also joined as an ex-officio member.

Community gathers for Day of Service in Alfred

“This is so impressive in so many ways. “It is a special combination of efforts between our community, Alfred State, and Alfred University. We are all Alfred at the end of the day. What better way to come together as a team than to make our downtown area more beautiful.”

Just under a hundred individuals including students from Alfred State and Alfred University joined by members of the Alfred community gathered Saturday for a Day of Service. Projects focused on helping spruce up areas on Main St. in Alfred.

“This is so impressive in so many ways,” commented Alfred State President Dr. Steve Mauro. “It is a special combination of efforts between our community, Alfred State, and Alfred University. We are all Alfred at the end of the day. What better way to come together as a team than to make our downtown area more beautiful.”

University Police to participate in car seat safety check

Members of the Alfred State University Police have teamed up with Ardent Solutions for a car seat safety check at Armstrong (6661 NY-305, Belfast, NY) on Sept. 23.

Members of the Alfred State University Police have teamed up with Ardent Solutions for a car seat safety check at Armstrong (6661 NY-305, Belfast, NY) on Sept. 23.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and is free. Certified Seat Technicians will inspect car seats and give attendees important information regarding car seat safety. Proper use of car seats can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent.

Yadollahi earns new certification

“With CM-Lean as my compass, I aim to bridge the gap between theory and practice, injecting real-world relevance into the classroom. I plan to equip our students with practical tools that will foster a profound understanding of site production, waste concepts, and their effects on project planning.”

Dr. Reza Yadollahi, assistant professor in the civil engineering department, earned a Certificate of Management-Lean Construction (CM-Lean) from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).

The certificate is an assessment-based credential that denotes knowledge and understanding of concepts related to lean adoption, practice and process transformation outlined in AGC’s Lean Construction Education Program. The certification consisted of a five-unit curriculum.

Alfred State College (ASC) recognized Jenna Zetwick, assistant professor in the Allied Health Department, as the recipient of the Student Advocate Award. 

Presented to a college employee who has made a profound impact on students. Each fall, a student advocate is honored from nominations of just first-year students.

Title III grant leading to retention and student success at ASC

“The training, the programs, and our faculty and staff are making a difference. We are seeing amazing increases in our retention rate of first-time, full-time students. We are thankful for this grant and the opportunities it has provided us to better serve our student population.”

Alfred State College (ASC) academic faculty and staff gathered recently to highlight the programs developed through a Title III grant and learn about the retention success garnered through these initiatives.

Alfred State was awarded a five-year $2.25 million grant from the US Department of Education in 2019. The Title III Strengthening Institutions Program is designed to help colleges and universities expand their capacity to serve low-income students by providing funds to improve academic quality, institutional management, and fiscal stability.

New class of Pioneers welcomed to Alfred State

Kaytlin Cottrell - Student Senate President

Alfred State College welcomed over 1,500 full-time students into the college community at the annual New Student Convocation. 

Carrie Cokely, Vice President for Academic Affairs, emceed the event that featured welcome addresses from President Steve Mauro and Student Senate President Kaytlin Cottrell.

Dr. Mauro encouraged the incoming students to never give up. He reflected on his journey as a student and the lessons he learned. He emphasized that there are faculty, staff, friends, and family that will support the new students when they need it most.
