In addition to enjoying a round of golf on June 22, participants in the 2021 Anthony S. Santaro Scholarship Golf Classic at Turning Stone Resort Casino were also able to learn more about Alfred State College’s Doc Bruce Campaign at a post-event reception.

Held each year in June at the golf course at Turning Stone in Verona, the Golf Classic attracts more than 350 participants, according to a description of the event on the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of New York State website. The AGC presents the Golf Classic each year.

ASC alum makes history in role with Hornell DPW

Ashley Weakland, a 2017 graduate of Alfred State’s surveying engineering technology program, recently made history when she became the first woman ever appointed as assistant Hornell Department of Public Works (DPW) superintendent.

Ashley Weakland, a 2017 graduate of Alfred State’s surveying engineering technology program, recently made history when she became the first woman ever appointed as assistant Hornell Department of Public Works (DPW) superintendent.

According to an article by The Spectator, Weakland worked as a roofer and at a sheet metal company in Connecticut before joining Hornell’s DPW as an engineering aide in February 2014.

ASC alum promoted to project executive at LeChase Construction

LeChase Construction Services, LLC has announced that Alfred State College alum Laird Updyke has been promoted to project executive in the Syracuse office.

LeChase Construction Services, LLC has announced that Alfred State College alum Laird Updyke has been promoted to project executive in the Syracuse office.

Updyke earned a bachelor’s degree in construction management and an associate degree in architectural technology, both from Alfred State.

Alfred State receives $50,000 grant from National Fuel Gas Company Foundation

This grant will benefit ASC’s heavy equipment operations program, as well as the college’s Doc Bruce Fundraising Campaign that aims to bolster the construction management program.

Alfred State College (ASC) is pleased to announce that it has received a $50,000 grant from the National Fuel Gas Company Foundation. This grant will benefit ASC’s heavy equipment operations program, as well as the college’s Doc Bruce Fundraising Campaign that aims to bolster the construction management program.

The grant is divided into two years, with $25,000 being used in the first year to acquire through lease new models of an excavator and a backhoe that will provide heavy equipment operations students with tools they’ll use on the job.

ABET reaccredits 10 Alfred State programs

Reaffirming that Alfred State is committed to providing a high-quality technical education, the Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology (ABET) has reaccredited 10 of the college’s technology-related majors.

Programs that were recently reaccredited include: computer engineering technology (AAS and BS), electrical engineering technology (AAS and BS), mechanical engineering technology (AAS and BS), surveying engineering technology (AAS), surveying and geomatics engineering technology (BS), construction engineering technology (AAS), and construction management (BS).

Construction management students excel in Associate Constructor Exam

Collectively, the 28 Alfred State students scored five points higher than the national average and accounted for a pass rate that was 9 percent higher than the nationwide rate. Altogether, more than 1,300 students from around the country participated in the exam.

Alfred State senior construction management students fared extremely well when putting their skills and knowledge to the test recently during the eight-hour Associate Constructor (AC) Exam.

The exam is the first level of certification in the Constructor Certification Program. This level of certification is ideal for recent graduates of four-year construction management programs or those transitioning into construction management from other industries. Associate constructors are individuals who have a high level of skill and knowledge in managing the process of construction.

The Construction Advancement Institute (CAI) ScholarshipAlfred State College’s own Abigail Campbell and Justin Campbell, both of Geneseo, were recently awarded scholarship grants from the Construction Advancement Institute (CAI).

Alfred State College’s own Abigail Campbell and Justin Campbell, both of Geneseo, were recently awarded scholarship grants from the Construction Advancement Institute (CAI).

Altogether, CAI awarded $45,000 in grants to nine regional undergraduate students who are enrolled in engineering, architecture, construction technology, construction management, or other related programs this fall.

Civil Engineering Technology Associate Professor Timothy Piotrowski is the adviser to the newly installed student members, all of whom are construction management majors. They include Ryan Schiffman (North Collins), Robert Sturtz (Marion), Jon Weaver (Palmyra), Nicholas Wilder (Eden), Douglas Horbachewski (Hamburg), Luke Podyma (Eden), Andrew Ball (Tonawanda), Zebadiah Hoffmann (Hamburg), and Ashton Roberts (Holland Patent).

Titled "NY College Helps Create Construction Professionals," the article highlights Alfred State's teams that competed in the Associated Schools of Construction Region 1 competition, and mentions that the college's construction management program is "feeding a hungry labor market."
