Pioneer PROfiles - Dean Jackson

“In labs we deal with a variety of livestock species. We have learned how to do medical work and I am looking forward in my future semesters to learning more about artificial insemination and more about genetics. The hands-on opportunities I have gotten here are valuable. These experiences have opened a whole field of careers that were not previously available to me.”

Dean Jackson

Dean Jackson (Cornwall, Ontario) earned a degree in Canada but decided to return to college to pursue education tied to his family roots. He grew up on a beef farm and enrolled in Alfred State’s agricultural technology program.

“I chose Alfred State because I was looking at agriculture programs. The closest program to my home would have been nine hours in Ontario. Seeing the hands-on opportunities, seeing the village, and meeting the faculty made me decide to come.”

Herman family make gift to increase scholarship funding

“It is important to help others. Everyone has different things in life that they want to be a benefactor for. I do not think there was ever a doubt that we wanted to do something substantial to continue to help the best we can.”

Russell Herman

1981 Alfred State graduates Russell and Brenda Herman started their lives together during their time on campus and look forward to helping future Pioneers experience college life in Alfred.

The couple who started dating during their sophomore year at Alfred State opened a small pet store (PetSaver Superstore and later renamed Pet Supplies Plus) in Rochester, NY. The small pet store became seven stores across the Rochester area that focused on providing healthy pet food to their customers.

Meet the Students - Ashley Clemente

“I am involved in a lot, and it feels good to help. In the spaces I have been, we have been able to create a community or family. It is important to give back to people who give to you. I have gained a lot from my experiences at Alfred State.”

Ashley Clemente

Ashley Clemente (Manhattan, NY/Life Science High School) fell in love with the Alfred State community and looks forward to growing her own community.

Ashley was introduced to Alfred State at a college fair and her interactions with the admissions counselor led her to visiting campus. “When I came to campus with my aunt the summer before my senior year, I got that feeling that this was the right place for me. Alfred State was affordable and accessible.”

Over 700 students experience Alfred State programs at VAST event

“We have students from all over Western New York and from as far away as the other side of Syracuse here. This is not a typical kind of open house. Most of the activities are interactive so they got to experience soldering, driving excavators, wiring electrical circuits, and judging dairy cows. There were forty activities and almost every department on campus was involved.”

Phil Schroeder

Chair of the Agriculture and Veterinary Technology Department

Over 700 students experienced the diversity of academic programs offered at Alfred State during the Veterinary, Agricultural, and Skilled Trades (VAST) career discovery event. The event was organized by the college’s Agriculture and Veterinary department and was hosted on the college farm.

Ashley Clemente named a SUNY EOP Ambassador

“For more than 50 years, the Educational Opportunity Program has served as a guiding light toward upward mobility and student success for those who may not have had a clear path to college. Our EOP student ambassadors, many the first in their families to go to college, are a testament to what can be achieved with the support provided by the EOP."

SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr.

Ashley Clemente (New York, NY), an Alfred State agricultural entrepreneurship major, has been named a SUNY EOP Student Ambassadors. Clemente is one of 22 students from 21 different SUNY campuses to be part of the program.

Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Student Ambassadors are being added to mentor their fellow students, create a student EOP support network of EOP students across the SUNY System, advise the Chancellor on strengthening the program, and help inspire more students to seek opportunities through EOP.
