Alfred State celebrates another successful Day of Giving

Thanks to another amazing show of support from alumni, faculty, staff, and friends, Alfred State College was able to raise over $270,000 on the eighth annual Day of Giving.

Herman family make gift to increase scholarship funding

“It is important to help others. Everyone has different things in life that they want to be a benefactor for. I do not think there was ever a doubt that we wanted to do something substantial to continue to help the best we can.”

1981 Alfred State graduates Russell and Brenda Herman started their lives together during their time on campus and look forward to helping future Pioneers experience college life in Alfred.

The couple who started dating during their sophomore year at Alfred State opened a small pet store (PetSaver Superstore and later renamed Pet Supplies Plus) in Rochester, NY. The small pet store became seven stores across the Rochester area that focused on providing healthy pet food to their customers. 

Alfred State Wins Offshore Wind Workforce Grant

“This grant for a half million dollars will enable ASC to make nearly 500 highly skilled electricians and welders available for the offshore wind workforce over a 24-month period, with hundreds graduating annually thereafter."

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that Alfred State College (ASC) is awarded a $500,000 grant to prepare students for the growing wind energy production industry. Governor Hochul and the Offshore Wind Training Institute (OWTI) are awarding a total of $4 million dollars for training initiatives at these State University of New York (SUNY) campuses: Alfred State College, Farmingdale State College, Hudson Valley Community College, Stony Brook University, Suffolk County Community College, SUNY Polytechnic Institute, and University at Buffalo.

Alfred State officially opens Doc Bruce Lab

“These (people – Jimmy and Gary) are legends of the institution and what they did allowed us to continue to cultivate that. That mentality still rings very true today to the legend of what Doc Bruce created. We are going to spend the time on students so that they can succeed in the real world. This is what we are all about at Alfred State and that is the kind of legacy that Doc Bruce created.”

Alfred State celebrated the official opening of the Doc Bruce Construction Materials Laboratory in the Engineering Technology Building. The state-of-the-art lab will support students in the civil engineering technology department along with helping develop a new industry workforce.

Buffalo Promise Scholarships to Alfred State

Alfred State College (ASC) is proud to announce the first recipients of a new scholarship program to assist residents on the East Side of Buffalo. The neighborhood was savagely attacked by a gunman who opened fire killing 10 people at a grocery store on May 12, 2022. One year later there are many ways that people across the nation have rallied to support the neighborhood and ASC is proud to provide hope and brighter futures for community residents.

Alfred State College (ASC) recently celebrated the ribbon cutting of a second Hall of Excellence made possible by generous contributions from J. Joseph Wilder, ’77, and his wife Laura Linneball. The newest Hall of Excellence, located in the entryway of the Workforce Development Center on the Wellsville campus, showcases achievements and contributions of ASC alumni and friends.

The Joseph S. Laraiso Construction & Geomatics Lab was officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The new lab will give Alfred State students the ability to work in teams in a hands-on facility that fosters learning.
