EOP Leadership Summer Prep Academy students assist Habitat for Humanity

Alfred State College (ASC) students in the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Leadership Summer Prep Academy gave back to the local community in Prattsburgh, NY.

Nearly fifty students and staff from the EOP program helped those in the Prattsburgh area with exterior projects like painting, staining, light landscaping, and yard clean-up. Others in the group worked on repairs to the Village Square Park gazebo.

Peter McClain and Reza Yadollahi honored with Leadership through Civic Engagement award

The award is given by the College Council is presented to acknowledge students, faculty, and staff who have led or initiated exemplary academic and/or co-curricular initiatives that demonstrate a commitment to engaging in the community— locally, nationally, or globally—through service, volunteerism, activism, politics, and much more. 

Alfred State hosts Special Olympic Spectacular

Alfred State hosted the annual Special Olympics Track and Field Spectacular on Friday. The event, which has won numerous NCAA and NACDA awards over the years, is organized by the athletic department and is run by coaches, student-athletes, and countless volunteers from across the college community.

288 athletes from 14 different school districts participated in the event. Each student participated in one running event and had a choice between a throwing or jumping competition.

A group of eight Alfred State College (ASC) students prepared and served dinner at the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester recently. The meal was enjoyed by thirty people.

The group consisted of three students in the electrical program, Dominic Pignataro (E. Northport, NY), Jackson Clark (Rush, NY), and James Olson- (Harperfield, NY), and five students in the culinary arts program Clarissa Ramirez (Bronx, NY), Rebekka Jones (Savona, NY), Seth Bogart (Friendship, NY), Alex Wasserman (Bath, NY), and Alex Miller (Hornell, NY).

Alfred State was one of 258 campuses in 38 states and the District of Columbia to be named a Voter Friendly Campus by Fair Election Center’s Campus Vote Project and NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. 

The initiative recognizes institutions that have planned and implemented practices that encourage their students to register and vote in the 2022 elections and in coming years.

Alfred State College mechanical engineering technology student Gabriel Cooks (Brooklyn, NY) has been honored by being named a Newman Civic Fellow. The fellowship is run by Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education.

Members of the Alfred State community came together in the Hinkle Library to celebrate Douglass Day. Each year, as a celebration of Frederick Douglass’ birthday, people across the world gather to help create new and free available resources for learning about Black history.

Project Prom Dress to be held April 8

“You don’t need a certain dress or style to be beautiful – you have the power to make any dress, no matter the shape or size, look gorgeous on you,” commented Marina Miketish on behalf of her fellow sisters of Delta Chi Omega. “This event ties in so well with our other philanthropy project, Project Pearl, which teaches Love Your Body, Love Yourself.”

The sisters of Delta Chi Omega (DCO) and the Center for Civic Leadership are excited to announce that Project Prom Dress will be held April 8 at Alfred State. The event will be held in the Pioneer Center between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Project Prom Dress is a student-driven initiative and is the passion and philanthropy of the sorority sisters of DCO. Annually, individuals and local bridal shops donate new and gently used gowns. The sorority sisters have collected hundreds of gowns, shoes, and accessories.

Alfred State teaches CPR class in honor of Denny Kellington

“CPR is the first step to saving someone’s life. The quicker we can get to someone to save them the better chance of survival they have. As an UP officer, we are certified every other year and we train yearly in these skills. There is a good need for training like this right now. It makes me feel good that I can teach people and help people prepare themselves for the future.”

Over 40 Alfred State College (ASC) faculty and staff members attended CPR/AED classes offered on campus to honor the heroic work of Buffalo Bills athletic trainer Denny Kellington. The class was sponsored and funded by the Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs and University Police.

Just a couple weeks ago, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest after making a tackle during the Bills game vs. the Cincinnati Bengals. Kellington along with other medical professionals worked quickly to save Hamlin’s life by performing CPR and using an AED.
