Senior engineering students create Marble Run Machine

“I feel like we have really shown what you can accomplish within the set bounds and design criteria that we were given for senior projects. I really hope to come back one day and see even greater future senior projects.”

Steffen Burkhardt

A group of seven Alfred State senior engineering students, Nehemiah Abelard-Johnson, Steffen Burkhardt, Joshua Mekeel, Dominick Scalzo, Elijah Symeslatini, Bee Williams, and Ashleigh Woodcock designed a Marble Run Machine that will be displayed on the ground floor of the Student Leadership Center.

First-year students explore material science at KA-Bar Knives

“Visits like this bring the material science concepts we discuss in class to life. Factory tours give our students a strong understanding of how metallurgy and applied engineering converge in the field.”

Aaron Straus

First-year students from Alfred State’s Mechanical Engineering Technology program recently visited KA-Bar Knives, a leading manufacturer of tactical and utility knives, to study the materials and processes used in high-performance blade production. The visit provided insight into the role of metallurgy, polymer science, and precision manufacturing for their Material Science class.

Pioneer PROfiles - Marina Miketish

“I am into math and science, so I like problem solving. I like that the labs are hands-on, which give me the chance to fully understand what is being taught. The labs really go with the lectures. You are learning something and then you are learning it again in a way that will be useful outside of college.”

Marina Miketish

Marina Miketish wanted to stay closer to home, attend a school that was affordable, and study Mechatronics. Alfred State has provided that and more to Marina as she double majors in Mechanical Engineering Technology and Mechatronics.

Engineering students display senior projects

"Projects like these are great opportunities for our students to take the knowledge learned in the classroom and apply it to real life situations. It is great to have advisory board members return to campus to learn about these projects and serve as judges. The input they give the students just adds to the experience."

Aric Bryant

Alfred State engineering students ended their semester by presenting their progress on their senior projects. They were judged on their poster presentation by members of the Advisory Committee and professors in the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Technology Department.

A Marble Machine Display and the Robotics Club’s Firefighting Robot tied for first place honors.

Engineering the next generation

“An engineer has worked on everything that you see. If you want to make a difference in some way, small or large, or you want to help create things that are going to improve people’s lives, engineering is that position for you.”

Pioneer PROfiles - Brandon Clark

“I love the labs that we get to apply what we were learning in the classrooms. Working on projects with other classmates really helped instill what I learned from the professors. The professors really care about your education and will help you any wat that they can.”

Brandon Clark

Brandon Clark (Lockwood, NY) has always enjoyed working on cars, trucks, and tractors with his father and was drawn to mechanical engineering. The mystery of the electrical side led him to double major in both mechanical engineering technology and electrical engineering.

“I chose Alfred State because it is a smaller campus, which is more of the style I am used to. My success in high school allowed me to get scholarships and made college more affordable.”

Pioneer PROfiles - Bee Williams

“There are so many high-quality professors that have worked in the industry. The class sizes are small, and the professors can help. We learn everything during lectures and put them to use on paper and then we go into labs and use apparatuses and do experiments using actual tools."

Bee Williams

Bee Williams (Canberra, Australia) always wanted to study abroad and her passion for basketball and mechanical engineering led her to Alfred State. She has experienced new things, gained leadership experience, and is excited to see what the future holds for her.

Meet the Students - Daneil Newman

“I chose Alfred State because of the hands-on opportunities that I get here and the affordability of the college. I chose mechanical engineering because I like to take things apart and see how things work inside. I also like the design aspect of mechanical systems.”

Meet the Students - Rafael Class

“I chose Alfred State because when I came on my visit, I was very impressed with the academic support system that they offered to students on campus. The football coach recruited me, and it just seemed like a good fit for me.”

Pioneer PROfiles - Gabriel Cooks

“Alfred State allows students the opportunity to get a more hands-on knowledge-based knowledge set. We get to do a lot more hands-on based things and I think that is more applicable to working in the industry.”

Gabriel Cooks

Gabriel Cooks has always had an interest in fixing and tinkering with things. That desire led him to Alfred State and the Mechanical Engineering Technology program.
