Five members of the Alfred State community honored with Chancellor’s Award

Jason Doviak, Phil Schroeder, Janice Stafford, Megan Clark, and Theresa Toth-Fleischman were honored for earning SUNY Chancellor Awards at the annual Alfred State Employee Recognition Celebration.

Doviak, the Director of Athletics, received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service.

Doviak has spearheaded the college’s final steps in the transition to NCAA Division III athletics, secured new conference memberships, and expanded the athletics program, including the addition of women’s wrestling and lacrosse.

A large crowd of students, faculty, administration, alumni, and community members enjoyed an evening of poetry, art, and music at the biennial Poetry Reading event hosted by the Alfred State English and Humanities Department.

Travis Matteson, Chair of the English and Humanities Department, emceed the Poetry reading that featured Vice President for Academic Affairs Carrie Cokely and retired Physical and Life Sciences professor Steven Jakobi reciting poems prior to opening the podium for students and community members.

The Alfred State English and Humanities department hosted a pair of events to highlight their students. The annual fall poetry reading drew a large crowd in the Allegany Room and students debated general education requirements in the Student Leadership Center.

Pioneer PROfiles - DA Burton

DA Burton (Los Angeles, CA) is excited to take his love of writing to the professional level with his studies in technical communication and emergent media at Alfred State.

DA has always had a passion to write creatively. He has written and performed music and has written manuscripts for an eight-part book series while driving across the country as a truck driver or working in a factory.

He came to Alfred State as an individual studies major and was crafting his own degree when the technical communication and emergent media major was introduced at the college.

Members of the Alfred State community came together in the Hinkle Library to celebrate Douglass Day. Each year, as a celebration of Frederick Douglass’ birthday, people across the world gather to help create new and free available resources for learning about Black history.

Held each semester, the poetry reading event in the Allegany Room allows an open microphone for all in the college community to share. The event featured music by Tim Bocchi, a variety of desserts from the culinary arts department, and student artwork.

Dozens of Alfred State College (ASC) Pioneers came together recently to share, listen, and reflect during a virtual poetry reading held on Microsoft Teams.

The event was presented by the English and Humanities Department and Ergo, the college’s literary and artistic publication, which is advised by SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor Dr. Aniko Constantine. Roughly 40 students and 10 faculty and administrators attended.
