Alfred State College architecture student Dante Savasta, of Windham, recently placed as a finalist in an international design competition titled, “The Big Thing: Architecture of the Abandoned.”

Dr. Alex Bitterman, a professor in the Architecture and Design Department at Alfred State College (ASC), was recently quoted in a National Geographic article about the importance of disaster “prepping.”

Written by Nina Strochlic, the article is titled “Disaster ‘prepping’ was once an American pastime. Today, it’s mainstream again.” The write-up notes how Bitterman first became interested in the subject in the second grade during emergency preparedness drills from the Cold War.

Utilizing the technology and resources available on campus, Alfred State College is teaming up with local businesses to help fill the need for more face masks for healthcare workers and essential employees.

According to Kevin Tucker, instructional support associate in the Architecture and Design Department, the college began producing masks in the Digital Fabrication Lab in the Engineering Technology Building on April 7.

Alfred State College recently joined 13 other Appalachian-based colleges and universities at the 19th annual Appalachian Teaching Project (ATP) Symposium in Washington, DC, to present The Urban Design Studio’s community visualization study of the village of Bolivar. 

Alfred State architecture students will unveil their vision for a revitalized downtown Bolivar at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4 at the Bolivar-Richburg High School gym.

Alfred State College is proud to announce that its five-year Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) program recently obtained full accreditation status from the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).

NAAB is the sole agency authorized to accredit US professional degree programs in architecture. Alfred State’s Bachelor of Architecture degree was issued a full three-year term of accreditation, which is the maximum possible term when transitioning from candidacy status.

A third-year class of Alfred State architecture students studying in Sorrento, Italy, recently participated in the second annual HOME: International Design Event developed and coordinated by architect and author Duo Dickinson, FAIA. Three Pioneers came away with honors, including a second-place award and two honorable mentions.

The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) recently hosted eight Alfred State College students at the 18^th annual Appalachian Teaching Project (ATP) symposium.

Supported and organized by the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services at East Tennessee State University, ATP is an applied-research training program for college and graduate students to design community-based economic development initiatives across the Appalachian Region as part of a school-based curriculum.

That’s why Alfred State College’s Department of Architecture and Design is taking all of the steps necessary to help make information on how to become a registered, practicing architect widely accessible to students.
