Men 2nd, Women 5th at GCC Harvest Invite

The Alfred State College men's swimming team finished 2nd at the Genesee CC Harvest Invitational while the women finished 5th.  The men scored 290.5 points on the day and trailed only GCC's 302.5 while the women accumulated 62 points.

Braden Kozlowski (N. Tonawanda) led the Pioneers by winning two events.  He won the 200 free (1:56.94) and the 100 back (1:03.32).  Talon Schroeder (Norwich) won the 1000 free (11:58.20), Jake Giglio (Hornell) won the 50 free (23.22) and 2nd in the 100 fly (59.69), and Mark Pendleton (Beacon) was 2nd in the 200 IM (2:21.55).

Pioneers Dive Into New Season

The Alfred State College swimming team dove into the new season with an impressive start in a double-dual meet.  The men defeated Mercyhurst North East 77-14 and Genesee CC 60-35 while the women defeated Mercyhurst North East 30-11 but fell 48-18 to Genesee CC.

Five New Members Inducted into Athletic Hall of Fame

2011 Hall of Fame ClassDuring Homecoming 2011, five Alfred State College athletic alumni were inducted into the athletic department hall of fame.  Swimmer John Meade, track & field athlete Damian Rodriguez, lacrosse player Matthew Covert, baseball player Joe Greany, and swimmer Ashley Vogl will join the 56 inducted athletes.

Several Alfred State College athletes have earned honors from the NJCAA, Region III, and the Western New York Athletic Conference for outstanding academic achievements.  Three Pioneers were recipients of the NJCAA Award for Superior Academic Achievement, three more were honored with the NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement, 11 were named Academic All-Region, and 15 were named Academic All-Conference.

Alfred State College Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Steve Tyrell has announced that Dr. Daryl Arroyo has been named the new Director of Athletics, Physical Education, Recreation and Intramurals.  Arroyo, who succeeds Kathy Feldman, begins his new duties at Alfred State on June 29.

The Alfred State College men's swimming team finished 11th at the 2011 NJCAA National Championship held at the Flickenger Center in Buffalo.  The women's team finished 16th.

In fourth day action, the 400 free relay team of Ethan Wright (Clyde Savannah), Tim Guarino (Cornwall), Josh Stellrecht (Oakfield Alabama), and Jake Giglio (Hornell) finished 12th in 3:34.64.

Wright also scored points in the 200 fly with a 16th place finish (2:19.84).

The Pioneers scored 69 points in the championships while the Lady Pioneers scored 1.

After the third day of the NJCAA Swimming National Championships, the Alfred State College men's team remains in 10th place.

After the third day of the NJCAA Swimming National Championships, the Alfred State College men's team remains in 10th place.  The Pioneers have scored 58 points in the competition.

The 200 medley relay team of Wade Harrington (Campbell Savona), Tim Guarino (Cornwall), Jake Giglio (Hornell), and Josh Stellrecht (Oakfield Alabama) finished 12th in 1:54.03.

Ethan Wright (Clyde Savannah) earned points in the 100 fly with a 15th place finish (57.03).

The Alfred State College men's swimming team remained in 10th place after two days at the NJCAA National Championships.  The Pioneers have scored 46 points with two days remaining of competition.

The 200 free relay team of Ethan Wright (Clyde Savannah), Wade Harrington (Campbell Savona), Josh Stellrecht (Oakfield Alabama), and Jake Giglio (Hornell) earned an 8th place finish with a time of 1:37.02.

In individual events, Wright swam to a 19th place finish in the 200 IM (2:13.28).

Pioneers Sit in 10th after Day One of Swim Nationals

The Alfred State College men's swimming team opened up the 2011 NJCAA National Championships with strong performances in the opening night relays.  The blue & gold sit in 10th out of the 14 teams that have scored afer day one.

The 400 medley relay team of Wade Harrington (Campbell Savona), Tim Guarino (Cornwall), Ethan Wright (Clyde Savannah), and Jake Giglio (Hornell) finished 10th with a swim of 4:12.16.  Wright, Harrington, Guarino, and Josh Stellrecht (Oakfield Alabama) combined for a 12th place finish in the 800 free relay (8:33.29).

Pioneers Set to Dive into Nationals

Six members of the Alfred State College swimming team will compete this week at the 2011 NJCAA National Championships at the Flickenger Center on the campus of Erie CC.

Six members of the Alfred State College swimming team will compete this week at the 2011 NJCAA National Championships at the Flickenger Center on the campus of Erie CC.

The four-day event will feature athletes from the 21 two-year colleges across the country that have swim programs.  Diving events begin on Wednesday afternoon while the swim events start at 6 p.m.  On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday preliminaries will start at 10 a.m. and finals will start at 6 p.m. with diving sandwiched in between at 1 p.m.
