HVAC students assist Allegany County Land Bank with plumbing work

A group of Alfred State College students in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) program recently gained some valuable hands-on, real-world experience while making a difference in the local community.

Alfred State alumnus Jacob Nohai was recently featured in an article by the Epoch Times titled, “Hard Work and Dirty Jobs Afford Plenty of Opportunity.”

The article highlights the significance of hard work and blue-collar jobs and employees such as Nohai, a recent heavy equipment operations graduate who had received a Work Ethic Scholarship from the Mike Rowe Works Foundation in 2017. Nohai is now a professional heavy equipment operator.

Alfred State College’s own Stephen Richard and Courtney DeRusha are donating their expertise, time, and energy to a project involved the restoration of the Langdon/Clemens family plot in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Alfred State College’s own Stephen Richard and Courtney DeRusha are donating their expertise, time, and energy to a project involved the restoration of the Langdon/Clemens family plot in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Located in Elmira, the plot is the final resting place of famous author Mark Twain, whose real name was Samuel Clemens. Richard is an associate professor in ASC’s Building Trades Department and DeRusha is a masonry major from Corning.

As work continues to progress on House 56, Alfred State College students and faculty recently broke ground on what will become the 57th home the school has constructed for the Wellsville community.

According to Building Trades Department Chair Jack Jones, the site has been cleared and the driveway has been installed for House 57. Once completed, the 1,600-square-foot residence will include three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a 450-square-foot deck, a full walk-out basement, a three-car garage, and an additional 420-square-foot bonus room for future expansion.

Second-year students in Alfred State College’s heavy equipment operations program, along with Lecturer Brian Adams, are spearheading the current build for a new “flexible theater” at the Fassett GreenSpace in Wellsville.

Second-year students in Alfred State College’s heavy equipment operations program, along with Lecturer Brian Adams, are spearheading the current build for a new “flexible theater” at the Fassett GreenSpace in Wellsville.

According to The Spectator, the students are working with Art for Rural America, a Wellsville-based nonprofit organization that runs the public garden, to construct a multipurpose outdoor classroom, shade pavilion, and event space.

Oishei Foundation awards Alfred State College a $100,000 grant for HVAC program

First, it will provide twice as many graduates each year to meet workforce needs. Second, it will provide graduates with more experience in clean energy, renewable energy, and manufacturing applications.

Alfred State College (ASC) is pleased to announce that it has recently received a $100,000 grant from The John R. Oishei Foundation. The grant will help grow the college’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) program and increase its capacity for meeting high industry demand of quality, job-ready graduates.

With an emphasis on hands-on, real-world learning, Alfred State College students in the School of Applied Technology are well prepared for the jobs they want after only two years of study. In fact, 99 percent either have a job immediately after graduation or continue studies for another degree.

As a further testament to the quality of education students receive at the Wellsville campus, US News & World Report and Niche.com have listed Alfred State among the top five colleges in the country for schools offering several majors.

Students attend ‘Careers in Construction’ event

Alfred State Building Trades students recently had the opportunity to learn more about in-demand residential trades jobs at a daylong “Careers in Construction” event in Canandaigua.

Hosted by the Rochester Home Builders’ Association (RHBA) and the Construction Industry Foundation, the event allowed students to tour the Riedman Design Studio, the NextGen Building Components facilities, and a new home construction site at The Cottages at Canandaigua.

Building Trades students preserve history while getting a hands-on education

Alfred State students are stepping in to help preserve the history of the nation’s public lands, while also receiving an important real-world, hands-on education.

For the third straight year, building trades: building construction students were able to use class time to help support the US state and federal parks systems. This year, eight students, accompanied by Instructional Support Assistant Mike Hess, traveled to Harriman State Park in Sloatsburg to perform historic preservation work on some of the park buildings.
