“I love watching the process of dirt turning into something like a house. It will be really rewarding to come back to Alfred and know that I poured the porch and built the garage on that house.”

Kendra Hammond

Kendra Hammond (Otego, NY) enjoys the real-world experience she has gained in her masonry program at Alfred State.

“I chose Alfred State for the hands-on aspect of the program. There is not as much classroom time and we are always out on the job site, doing real work.”

“I took BOCES during high school and I wanted to get a bigger version of it and get to see every part of it. I have always had a heart for construction. I did mission trips growing up and we started by building decks and re-doing houses.”

ASC Heavy Equipment Operations rebuilding flood-damaged areas

“It is all slowly shaping together. As this progresses it is truly remarkable how much we've done. We've done so many different things and it's turning into a whole new place.”

Preston Bilotta

Alfred State College senior Heavy Equipment Operation majors are gaining real-world experience this semester as they assist local communities in rebuilding after the floods that caused damage across the Southern Tier. The project helps hard-hit communities, provides hands-on experience for students, and is very gratifying to faculty and staff as these neighbors in need are so very grateful.

“This group of students represented the college well. It is always amazing to be part of such a large competition with high school and college students competing and showing what they can do in such a wide variety of competitions and the students always shine as strong Pioneers. I look forward to this trip every year.”

Dean Jeff Stevens

“The professors are fun. They really try to make it the best experience for us and make sure that they get the knowledge to us. They make sure we understand and are super willing to help whenever we need extra help with anything.”

Conor Compton

Conor Compton wanted to study heavy equipment operations and continue to dive when he went to college. He was able to find both at Alfred State.

“I chose Alfred State because of the great opportunities we have here to operate all this equipment. The coolest part is I get to participate in the diving team which is something not a lot of programs will allow you to do. This was a unique program because I get the college experience, the college degree, and I also get to dive on the team.”

Brian Adams

Alfred State senior Heavy Equipment Operations students took part in a hands-on, real-world simulation of a trench collapse in partnership with the Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corp (WVAC).
