As he looked through the brochures he was holding, Anthony Harvey liked what he was seeing: information about a college of technology that offered more than 70 hands-on majors and paths to a brighter future.

In celebration of the School of Applied Technology’s 50th anniversary, the Culinary Arts Department will be hosting a Mardi Gras buffet from 5-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, in the Culinary Arts Building on the Wellsville campus.

“We run this as an annual event cooperatively with the Career Development Center to offer opportunities for students to learn about career pathways,” said Electrical Trades Department Chair Jeff Stevens. “It shows our students the choices they have as graduates of Alfred State.”

"The average age in the trade right now is 53 years. This indicates a workforce that is nearing retirement and shows a large opportunity for youth to get involved,” says Stephen Richard, assistant professor, Building Trades, at Alfred State.

For the seventh year in a row, some Alfred State senior building trades: building construction students are heading south to put their skills to work helping those in need. 

The Associate in Occupational Studies degree program will prepare students for a career as a motorcycle/power sports/ small engine technician, incorporating a progressively challenging format and hands-on laboratories, using full-size functioning vehicles.

“This is really an endurance event, so it was exhausting, but the students had a lot of fun and I think we were able to make connections that will help us move our program forward,” Johnson said. “Additionally, this event gets a lot of press, so Alfred State got a lot of national exposure along the way.”

Trevor Huntley, masonry, Conklin, earned a bronze medal in the masonry category for placing third against competitors from across the country. Andrea Koston, culinary arts: baking, production and management, Rochester, also earned a top 10 national finish, coming in fifth place in the commercial baking category.

This year’s recipients were Debra Burch, associate professor in the Culinary Arts Department, and Jason Cronin, senior staff assistant and head baseball coach in the Athletics Department.

Following a “Name the Nestlings” social media campaign in which more than 36,000 people voted on five different name pairings, the two baby bald eagles at the US National Arboretum were officially named “Freedom” and “Liberty.”
