Homecoming and Family Weekend set for Oct. 11-13

six people standingThe annual spirit rally and bonfire will be Oct. 11 from 6-8:30 p.m. in the parking lot at Pioneer Stadium. Students and their families are encouraged to come show their Alfred State spirit and cheer on a student team during the friendly Pioneer Challenge competitions such as the Not-So-Naked-Half-Mile and dodgeball.

Plenty of fun activities await Alfred State Pioneers and their families during this year’s Homecoming and Family Weekend, set for Oct. 11-13.

Kicking off the festivities on Friday will be the ninth annual Carly’s Club Race for a Cure 5K at 5 p.m. at Pioneer Stadium. Registration for the 5K will begin at 4 p.m. by the stadium. The cost is $15, which will be donated to Roswell Park Cancer Institute for pediatric cancer research. The first 75 participants will receive a free T-shirt.

Alfred State to host “Farm to Table Dinner” Sept. 24

The cost of the dinner is $17 per adult and $10 for children 10 and under.

The Culinary Arts Department will present a “Farm to Table Dinner” from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24. The meal will be held at The Rig, which is located in the Culinary Arts Building on the Wellsville campus.

Alfred State College recently welcomed 39 new faculty and staff members.

The Division of Business Affairs and Facilities has 11 new hires, including Blake Bates, Dominick Carbone, Keith Conner, James Downey, Adam Evans, Michael Evans, Jason Graves, Robert Marsh, Robert O’Brien, Julia Ormsby, and Timothy Sortore.

Bates is a new cleaner in the Student Leadership Center. He earned an associate degree from Alfred State.

Carbone is now a cleaner in EJ Brown Hall. He holds an associate degree from Alfred State.

Alfred State Associate Professor of Digital Media and Animation Jeremy Speed Schwartz recently received a pair of awards for his short film titled, “The Land of the 3-Drink Minimum.”

Specifically, the film earned a silver award in the Animation category at the 2019 Chautauqua International Film Festival, and an award for “Outstanding Western NY Micro-Short” at the Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival. The film originally premiered at the Athens Animfest in March and had its North American Premiere at the Detroit International Festival of Animation in April.

Alfred State Ranked Top 10 for all Northern Regional Colleges

The US News definition of a regional college is one that focuses on undergraduate education with less than 50 percent of the degrees in liberal arts disciplines. This makes for a more career-ready graduate.

The 2020 US News & World Report Best Colleges rankings show Alfred State College (ASC) tied for No. 6 on the Top Public Schools list for Northern Regional Colleges. ASC is also a stellar No. 1 among SUNY regional colleges. When compared to all public and private colleges in the 11-state northern region, Alfred State tied for No. 10, up two spots from last year.
