Pioneer Track Hosts Quad Meet

The Alfred State men's track and field team finished 2nd while the women finished 3rd in a quad meet held at Pioneer Stadium. RIT's men team won the meet with 184 points while Alfred University won the women's competition with 196.5 points.

On the men's side, Shawn Charles (Rochester/Greece Olympia) won the 100 m dash and qualified for Nationals with a run of 11.25.  He was also 2nd in the 200 m dash (22.77).  Garrison Koehler (Bath) won the 800 m (2:07.41)

Women Ranked #2, Men Ranked #4 in 1st Outdoor Track Poll

The Alfred State outdoor track & field team sits in the top five of the first NJCAA Division III poll of the season. The women sit in the #2 position while the men are ranked #4.

The Pioneers have competed just once in the early season, at Lock Haven University, but sit in the top pack of the poll.  SUNY Delhi is ranked #1 in the women's poll followed by Alfred State, Harper (IL) College, Mohawk Valley CC, and Howard (MD) CC.  Harper leads the men's poll followed by Delhi, Howard, Alfred, and Queensbury CC.

Track Meet Moved Back to Tuesday

The scheduled track & field event at Alfred State's Pioneer Stadium on Friday (3/30) has been moved to Tuesday, April 3rd due to forecasted low temperatures and rain.

The meet will feature athletes from Alfred State, Alfred University, Finger Lakes CC, and RIT.  Action will start at 2 p.m.

Track Team Opens Up Outdoor Season

The Alfred State outdoor track and field team opened up the 2012 season with a strong showing at the Elliston Early Bird Open on the campus of Lock Haven University.

Briana Dorsey (Rochester/School of the Arts) won the 100 m and qualified for Nationals with a winning time of 12.95.  Shea McKee (Canisteo Greenwood) qualified for Nationals in both the long jump (4.61 m) and the high jump (1.37 m) while earning 4th place finishes.  Meghann Miskell (Livonia) also qualified for Nationals with a leap of 2.45 m in the pole vault.

Murphy 5th in 800, Nagle 9th in Heptathlon

Alfred State sophomore Tara Murphy (Rochester/Wilson) earned a 5th place finish at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships at Eastern Illinois.  Travis Nagle (Randolph) finished 9th in the two-day heptathlon competition.

Murphy ran the 2:25.23 in the 800 m to finish 5th.  Her 4 points in the event led the Lady Pioneers to a 37th place finish out of 40 teams tha9 t scored in the event.  Murphy was seeded 4th in the finals after running a 2:25.60 in the prelims.

Indoor Track Nationals - Day One Report

Murphy finished 4th in the 800 m preliminaries to qualify for the finals on Saturday.  She ran a 2:25.60, just two seconds slower than the top finisher in the prelims.  Murphy's fastest 800 of the season is 2:23.51.

NCAA grants exploratory status to Alfred State

The NCAA Division III membership committee announced this week that it has granted exploratory status to the Alfred State athletic program. Alfred State submitted the NCAA application in January.

 “Moving to NCAA is a natural evolution in creating a four-year college environment at Alfred State. We are excited about the prospects of having our athletes compete for four years wearing the blue & gold,”  said Alfred State President, John Anderson.

Votava and Giglio Named Athletes of the Week

Indoor track athlete Megan Votava (Alfred Almond) and swimmer Jake Giglio (Hornell) have been named the Alfred State athletes of the week by the SID office.

Votava had a solid showing at the Region III Championships on Friday.  She won the pole vault with a 2.60 m leap which established her with the 2nd best all-time mark in the record books.  She also set a new school record in the 60 m hurdles (10.04) while finishing 3rd.

Pioneers Track Finishes 3rd at Regionals

Both the Alfred State men's and women's indoor track & field team finished 3rd at the Region III Championships held in conjunction with the RIT Orange & Brown Invitational. The women scored 96 points while the men scored 86.

Tara Murphy (Rochester/Wilson) led the Lady Pioneers with two 1st place performances.  She won the 400 in 60.69 to establish a new school record.  The previous record of 60.84 was established by Gwenn Brown in 1986.  Murphy also won the 800 in 2:24.48.

Hall had a big week for the Pioneer basketball team. He averaged 23 ppg and 9 rpg in the blue & gold's three contests.  He recorded a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds vs. Genesee, had 26 points and nine rebounds at Erie, and finished the week with 21 points and seven rebounds at Niagara.  For the season, Hall is averaging 13.8 ppg and 6.2 rebounds.  He leads the team with 52 made 3-pointers.
