Alfred State Assistant Professor honored for global perspective

"I am incredibly excited about the work that Alfred State is doing to develop these initiatives across our broad range of degree programs, including vocational. Given the challenges facing us in higher education, framing our civic engagement efforts as an integral part of workforce readiness and democratic citizenship is essential.”

Alfred State hosts annual science and technology fair

“It was a great day to interact with these students. The competitors had great ideas and it was interesting to hear them tell the judges what they did and what they learned. All that competed should be proud of their efforts. It is always a special day to host these young scientists on our campus.”

Isaac Klingensmith

Students from seven different schools participated in Alfred State’s annual science and technology fair. Students from Alfred-Almond, Canaseraga, Canisteo-Greenwood, Hornell, Portville, Southern Tier Catholic School, and Wildwood BOCES competed in three divisions.

Alfred State professors, staff, and students served as judges. Students demonstrated their projects and answered questions from the judges. After a series of deliberations, the results were announced and celebrated by Vice President for Academic Affairs Carrie Cokely, PhD.

Pioneer PROfiles - Dean Jackson

“In labs we deal with a variety of livestock species. We have learned how to do medical work and I am looking forward in my future semesters to learning more about artificial insemination and more about genetics. The hands-on opportunities I have gotten here are valuable. These experiences have opened a whole field of careers that were not previously available to me.”

Dean Jackson

Dean Jackson (Cornwall, Ontario) earned a degree in Canada but decided to return to college to pursue education tied to his family roots. He grew up on a beef farm and enrolled in Alfred State’s agricultural technology program.

“I chose Alfred State because I was looking at agriculture programs. The closest program to my home would have been nine hours in Ontario. Seeing the hands-on opportunities, seeing the village, and meeting the faculty made me decide to come.”

Meet the Students - Gianna Gotte

“My professors are student oriented. They make you very comfortable asking questions. They go above and beyond to help you and make sure you understand things.  I have never felt like I couldn’t go to my professor for something.”

After earning general education credits at a college closer to home, Gianna Gotte (Whitesboro, NY) found the perfect match with the diagnostic medical sonography program at Alfred State.

Gianna is part of a family that works in healthcare and was searching for an ultrasound program. “I want to help people and be a difference in their experience in health care. I know it can be scary for a patient. I also like talking to people and learning their stories.”
