For over 30 years, the Bethesda Foundation has been a major supporter of Alfred State’s nursing and health-related programs, having generously donated funds for grants, scholarships, and major projects.

And today, that relationship is still going strong, as the Foundation continues to support nursing education locally by funding scholarships for students from Steuben, Allegany, and Livingston counties who are enrolled in nursing at Alfred State.

Research from Georgetown University predicts that by 2020, 69 percent of all jobs in New York will require postsecondary education. Unfortunately, only 58 percent of New Yorkers aged 25 or older have earned that level of education. Nationwide it’s predicted that this skills gap will result in 5 million jobs remaining unfilled.

Site review on nursing program to be held March 2

The public is invited to meet the site visit team and share their comments about the program in person at a meeting scheduled for 3:30 p.m. March 2 at the Physical and Health Sciences Building, Room 102. Written comments are also welcome.

Alfred State announces that it will host a site review for continuing accreditation of its associate degree nursing program by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).

Nursing students aid Haiti residents during winter break

A group that included several nursing students traveled to Haiti last month to provide medical assistance to some of the country’s citizens.

Those from Alfred State who attended the trip included nursing students Samantha Smith, Eldred, PA; Reno Cheshire, Port Jervis; Annaliese Corrao, Grand Island; Cierra Dean, Andover; Taylor Voigt, Fairport; Whitney Farrand, Franklinville; and Anna Wood, RN, Canandaigua; as well as Daniel Woolston, assistant director of medical services, Health and Wellness Services Department; and Jessica Lippa, assistant professor in the Nursing Department.

Bethesda Foundation tours Alfred State Nursing department simulation lab

“Alfred State appreciates the Bethesda Foundation and its ongoing scholarship support to nursing students in these three counties,” said Dr. Lisa Harmon, chair of the Nursing department.

Nine members of the Bethesda Foundation visited Alfred State Thursday to get a first-hand look at one of the Nursing department’s high-fidelity simulation labs in the Physical and Health Sciences building.

The group watched as senior nursing students Chelsea Goodwill, of Falconer, N.Y., and Jessica Matava, of Ontario, N.Y., administered care to a SimMan 3G ® manikin, which simulates an actual hospital patient.

Phil Loree, president of the Bethesda Foundation, said of the simulation, “I think it’s great. The ability to use a manikin like that is fantastic.”

Alfred State Partners in New Grant to Continue Building a More Highly Educated Nursing Workforce

The Alfred State Associate of Science in nursing and the Alfred State Bachelor of Science in nursing programs, partners in the first APIN grant received by the Foundation of New York State Nurses in 2012, will continue as partners in the new grant. Lisa Harmon, PhD, RN, CNE, chair of the ASN and BSN nursing programs at Alfred State will lead the nursing programs’ participation in the new grant project.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has announced that New York has been chosen to receive a $300,000, two-year grant in Phase II of its Academic Progression in Nursing program (APIN). The grant, awarded to the Foundation of New York State Nurses, will support the NYS Future of Nursing Action Coalition’s efforts to implement the Institute of Medicine’s recommendation that 80 percent of practicing registered nurses hold the baccalaureate degree by 2020.

Nursing Pay It ForwardThe Alfred State Nursing Department continued its “Pay It Forward” philosophy through the awarding of its seventh annual round of “Pay It Forward” scholarships to Gary Crouse, Hammondsport, NY; John Kozlyuk, Rochester, NY; and Maura Tuffey, Albany, NY. Each recipient received $150 and good wishes from the class of 2005 who first established the scholarship.

The Alfred State Nursing Department continued its “Pay It Forward” philosophy through the awarding of its seventh annual round of “Pay It Forward” scholarships to Gary Crouse, Hammondsport, NY; John Kozlyuk, Rochester, NY; and Maura Tuffey, Albany, NY. Each recipient received $150 and good wishes from the class of 2005 who first established the scholarship. Each scholarship recipient needs to demonstrate an understanding of caring as evidenced by implementing a unique caring project and to reveal insight and sensitivity in the written assignment.
