Four employees were honored recently with Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Faculty Service, Professional Service, Teaching, and Classified Service.

Alfred State College recently presented David Chilson, an instructional support assistant in the Building Trades Department, with the Student Advocate Award.

Each year, students have the opportunity to nominate an employee who has had a profound impact on them for the award. Chilson was passionately nominated by a student who credits him with helping her to feel welcome at Alfred State and in her program. Chilson, she said, was “the first face of Alfred State I encountered when I arrived at the Wellsville campus for my first tour nearly three years ago.”

Alfred State College’s own Priyanka Karki and Rebecca Stevens are among the 100 State University of New York (SUNY) students who have been recently honored with Chancellor’s Undergraduate Scholarships and Graduate Fellowships.

These awards recognize SUNY students who are graduating this academic year with a SUNY associate or bachelor’s degree and are continuing their education at one of SUNY’s 64 campuses for either a bachelor’s completion degree or graduate degree, respectively. Eligible students must also have maintained a GPA of 3.3 or higher.

Alfred State College took to Instagram recently to honor more than three dozen faculty, staff, and students through its virtual Pioneer Award Show.

Over the course of a week, the college recognized 39 Pioneers for their achievements in various Student Affairs-related areas, including Residential Services, Student Engagement, Student Senate, Performing Arts, Greek Life, the Center for Intercultural Unity, and Civic Engagement. Each individual Pioneer Award winner received a gift card, while honored clubs and organizations received additional funding for the fall semester.

Alfred State College is proud of its students and is delighted to recognize those who have been awarded for their excellence in academics, leadership, civic engagement, and more.

Recently, more than 240 Alfred State students received awards, which were distributed through the mail, as the annual in-person Honors Convocation ceremony was not possible this year. Provost Dr. Kristin Poppo said the college congratulates these award recipients and is proud of their accomplishments.

Alfred State is proud to announce that USA Archery has named Alfred State archer Robert “Jay” Lawrence IV to its 2020 All-American Team. Lawrence is the first Pioneer to achieve this honor in the four-year history of Alfred State’s program.  

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the spring 2020 collegiate archery season was cancelled, which means that honors were calculated exclusively on results from the USA Archery Indoor Nationals. 

Utilizing the technology and resources available on campus, Alfred State College is teaming up with local businesses to help fill the need for more face masks for healthcare workers and essential employees.

According to Kevin Tucker, instructional support associate in the Architecture and Design Department, the college began producing masks in the Digital Fabrication Lab in the Engineering Technology Building on April 7.

Alfred State College is pleased to announce that Trish Haggerty has been named the new interim executive assistant to the president.

Haggerty has been an Alfred State employee since January 2016, when she was hired as the director of Annual Giving. She was promoted to director of Development in 2019. 

Alfred State College is proud to announce that two of its students, Brianna Swartz and Cassandra Robbers, have each been named a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence (CASE).

Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education, has announced the 290 students who will make up the organization’s 2020-2021 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows, including Alfred State College’s own Elijah Blumberg.

A sophomore mechanical engineering technology student from Buffalo, Blumberg is a student leader and active in residence life programming. He has effectively used his role as residence assistance and civic engagement advocate to facilitate events introducing first-year students to civic leadership.
