Heidi Williams (Cassadaga Valley, NY) feels she is prepared to start her career and hopes to eventually own her own business after completing her studies as a surveying and geomatics engineering at Alfred State.

Adam Estes (Caledonia, NY) was encouraged to check out surveying by his high school coach and that advice has led him to a career that he is excited to start. 

“I had no idea that I wanted to be a surveyor. My basketball coach is a surveyor and graduated from Alfred State. He encouraged me to try surveying and now here I am, and I have loved it ever since.”

The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) has awarded the Alfred State College surveying and geomatics engineering technology program a $10,000 award. 

The annual award recognizes surveying programs that best reflect the organization’s mission to advance licensure for surveyors in order to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of the public. Alfred State was one of seven schools across the country to be recognized by the NCEES.

Yadollahi earns new certification

“With CM-Lean as my compass, I aim to bridge the gap between theory and practice, injecting real-world relevance into the classroom. I plan to equip our students with practical tools that will foster a profound understanding of site production, waste concepts, and their effects on project planning.”

Dr. Reza Yadollahi

Dr. Reza Yadollahi, assistant professor in the civil engineering department, earned a Certificate of Management-Lean Construction (CM-Lean) from the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).

The certificate is an assessment-based credential that denotes knowledge and understanding of concepts related to lean adoption, practice and process transformation outlined in AGC’s Lean Construction Education Program. The certification consisted of a five-unit curriculum.

The award is given by the College Council is presented to acknowledge students, faculty, and staff who have led or initiated exemplary academic and/or co-curricular initiatives that demonstrate a commitment to engaging in the community— locally, nationally, or globally—through service, volunteerism, activism, politics, and much more. 

Alfred State officially opens Doc Bruce Lab

“These (people – Jimmy and Gary) are legends of the institution and what they did allowed us to continue to cultivate that. That mentality still rings very true today to the legend of what Doc Bruce created. We are going to spend the time on students so that they can succeed in the real world. This is what we are all about at Alfred State and that is the kind of legacy that Doc Bruce created.”

Alfred State celebrated the official opening of the Doc Bruce Construction Materials Laboratory in the Engineering Technology Building. The state-of-the-art lab will support students in the civil engineering technology department along with helping develop a new industry workforce.

A group of eight Alfred State surveying students traveled to Arlington, VA to compete in the National Society of Professionals Surveyors 2023 Student competition. 

New class of Sigma Lambda Chi inducted

Four Alfred State College (ASC) construction management students were inducted into the Sigma Lambda Chi honor society. The honorees were presented with achievement certificates, ceremonial pins, and other memorabilia associated with Alfred State’s Zeta V chapter.

The 2023 class included students Jack Curabba (Shohola, PA), Dylan Kehr (Lawtons, NY), Matthew Szczepanski (Rochester, NY) and Halimat Akanbi (Ozone Park, NY). All four met the academic, extracurricular, and work experience criteria established by the International Honor Society.

Laraiso Construction & Geomatics Lab officially opens

The Joseph S. Laraiso Construction & Geomatics Lab was officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The new lab will give Alfred State students the ability to work in teams in a hands-on facility that fosters learning.
