Lady Pioneers Win Third Straight

The Alfred State College women's basketball team raced out to an early lead and never looked back in a 85-39 victory over Roberts Wesleyan JV on Thursday evening.  The Lady Pioneers have now won three in a row and are 3-1 on the year.

Brittney Brooks (Elmira Free) led the way for ASC with 23 points while Danielle Conway (Bainbridge Guilford) finished with 16.  Ayana Rhodes (Cleremont, FL) added a season high 15 points, five assists, and four steals.  Kim Winquist (Wilson) came off the bench and chipped in four points, eight rebounds, and four blocks.

Second Half Run Lifts Cuyahoga past ASC

Cuyahoga (OH) CC used a 20 to 5 run in the second half to break a 42-42 tie en route to a 71-62 victory over Alfred State on Thursday evening.  The Pioneers are now 2-4 on the year.

Cuyahoga led 32-17 late in the first half but ASC went on a 17-0 run to gaina 34-32 lead.  The teams traded leads and were tied at 42-42 prior to the Challengers game deciding run.

Moore Named Coach of the Year

Four Pioneers Run to All-American Honors

Four members of the Alfred State College cross country team ran to NJCAA Division III honors with top 15 finishes at the National Championships last weekend at Finger Lakes CC.  John Sweeney (Barker) earned first team, Brandon Lewis (Red Creek) and Carey Crooker (Addison) earned second team, and Joe Seitz (Williamsville North) was third team.

Wrestlers Open up Season with Victory

The Alfred State College wrestling team opened up the 2009-10 season with a convincing 36-12 victory over Jamestown CC.  The Pioneers won eight of the nine matches wrestled.

JCC's only victory of the evening came in the first match at 165 lbs.  Alfred State quickly erased the 6-0 deficit with a 11-7 victory by Dan Steiger (Miller Place) at 174, a 9-0 victory by Dan Dwyer (LaFayette), a forfeit victory at 197 for Taylor Nelson (Somers), and a pin by Zach Rouse (Canisteo Greenwood) at heavyweight.

Cayuga CC hit two foul shots with 6.8 seconds remaining to defeat the Alfred State College men's basketball 81-80.  The Pioneers fall to 2-3 on the season.

Alfred State led 4-2 and trailed until midway through the second half.  The blue & gold gained the lead 63-62 and led 77-71 in the final minutes before CCC made their comeback.

Coates' Late Jumper Leads Lady Pioneers to Victory

Megan Coates (Nazareth) hit a 10 foot jumper with four seconds left to lift the Alfred State College women's basketball team to a 72-71 victory over Cayuga CC on Tuesday evening.  The Lady Pioneers improve to 2-1 on the year.

The blue & gold led 39-28 at half and led by as many as 19 before the Lady Spartans made a furious comeback and took the lead in the final minute before Coates hit the game-winner.

Hunter and KajikawaDr. John 0. Hunter, former president of Alfred State College (1986-93), returned to campus in late October for the ERGO Fall Poetry Reading.

Hunter and KajikawaDr. John 0. Hunter, former president of Alfred State College (1986-93), returned to campus in late October for the ERGO Fall Poetry Reading. Hunter, who spent the summer in Scotland studying poet Robert Burns, recited a Burns poem and several poems by students at the Red Cloud Indian School in South Dakota.
