Lady Pioneers Fall in Two Close Contests

The Alfred State softball team lost two close contests to SUNY Delhi 6-4 and 9-8 as they wrapped up their weekend road trip.

In the opener, Athena Scavo (Hornell) was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI while Kristen Potter (N. Potter, PA) was 2 for 4.  Shelby Freligh (Auburn /Union Springs) and Tara Scholla (Genesee Valley) both drove home runs.

Pioneers Win Ten Events at Track Regionals

The Alfred State outdoor track & field team registered ten victories in day two of the Region III Championships held at SUNY Delhi. The Pioneer men finished 2nd in the standings out of five teams while the women placed 4th.

Briana Dorsey (Rochester/School of the Arts) and Tara Murphy (Rochester/Wilson) were double winners.  Dorsey won the 100 in 12.78 and the 200 in 26.27 while Murphy won the 400 in 59.73 and the 800 in 2:26.04. 

FLCC Rallies in Both Games to Down Pioneers

Finger Lakes CC rallied in the 5th inning of both games of a Region III Division III doubleheader to defeat Alfred State 4-2 & 10-4 on Saturday afternoon. In the opener, Alfred led 2-1 heading into the 5th before the Lakers scored three to take the lead for good and in the nightcap the Pioneers led 4-2 before the Lakers scored three in the 5th en route to the victory.

The Alfred State softball team split a doubleheader at Columbia Greene CC on Saturday. CGCC won the opener 13-5 while the Pioneers won the nightcap 9-4.

With the game tied at 5-5, the Lady Twins scored six runs in the 4th to put the game out of reach.  Shelby Freligh (Auburn/Union Springs) was 2 for 3 with a RBI while Cora Murphy (Canisteo Greenwood) was 1 for 2 with a RBI.

Pioneers Down #9 HVCC in Season Finale

The Alfred State lacrosse team was able to come out on top of a close home contest for the first time this season. The Pioneers defeated #9 ranked Hudson Valley CC 11-10 to close out the season with a 7-9 mark. The Pioneers had lost four close home contests earlier in the season by a combined four goals.

Pioneers Complete Day One of Track Regionals

The Alfred State track & field team had two 2nd place finishes in day one of the 2012 Region III Championships held at SUNY Delhi.

Megan Votava (Alfred Almond) was 2nd in the women's javelin competition with a national qualifying toss of 26.88 m.  The men's 4x800 relay team of Tyler Lehman (Wellsville), Garrison Koehler (Bath), Brian Tubbs (Chemung/Waverly), and Jordan Friedman (West Nyack/Clarkstown South) earned a 2nd place finish with a finish of 8:35.5.

Campaign 101 Meets Adoption Goal

Eighty-three animals have been adopted from the Hornell Area Humane Society and 18 from the SPCA Serving Allegany County in Wellsville, NY. Eighteen of the adoptions were by faculty, staff, or students since August 2011.

Kats Down Pioneers

Erie CC defeated Alfred State 12-4 in a Region III Division III baseball game played at Maple City Park on Thursday.  The second game of the doubleheader was called due to rain and poor field conditions prior to the game reaching an official game.

The Kats jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the 1st inning but the Pioneers got right back into the game in the bottom half of the inning when Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton) connected on a three-run homer that escaped the park over the left field fence.  The homer was the first of the season for Wheaton.

Two Masonry Seniors Receive Award for Excellence

Masonry Seniors Receive Award for ExcellenceThis year’s recipients are Tessa Boyce of Deer Isle, ME, and Alan Bieser of Westfield, PA. Southern Tier Concrete Products manufactures quality sustainable living products made from local materials, and has long been involved with Alfred State’s masonry program.

Two seniors in the masonry program were recently award the Southern Tier Concrete Products, Inc. Achievement Award for Excellence in the trowel trades. The award is presented to outstanding students in the masonry curriculum. This year’s recipients are Tessa Boyce of Deer Isle, ME, and Alan Bieser of Westfield, PA. Streater has NFL Dreams

Former Alfred State football player Rod Streater hopes to hear his name announced from the podium of the 2012 NFL Draft at Radio City Music Hall this weekend. Streater, who wore the Pioneer blue & gold in 2008 and 2009 before transferring to Temple University, wrapped up his collegiate playing career in December with a touchdown catch in Temple’s win in the New Mexico Bowl
