The Alfred State outdoor track & field team registered ten victories in day two of the Region III Championships held at SUNY Delhi. The Pioneer men finished 2nd in the standings out of five teams while the women placed 4th.
Briana Dorsey (Rochester/School of the Arts) and Tara Murphy (Rochester/Wilson) were double winners. Dorsey won the 100 in 12.78 and the 200 in 26.27 while Murphy won the 400 in 59.73 and the 800 in 2:26.04.
On the men's side, Shawn Charles (Rochester/Greece Olympia) won the 100 (11.27), Brian Tubbs (Chemung/Waverly) won the 400 (51.09), Alex Hewlett (Wellsville) won the high jump (1.85 m), David Miller (Elmira Southside) won the pole vault (4.50 m), and Jayvon Larkin (Rochester/Wilson) won the triple jump (13.04 m). The 4 x 100 relay team of Zach Woodard (Adams Center/South Jefferson), Hewlett, Tubbs, and Charles also took 1st place with a time of 43.94.
Other top performances on the women's side included; Megan Votava (Alfred Almond) was 2nd in the pole vault (2.72 m) and 3rd in the 100 hurdles (17.43), Corrie Mulligan (Belmont/Alfred Almond) was 2nd in the 400 hurdles (75.21), Jen DiNovio (Guilderland) was 2nd in the discus (29.29), Kayla Franchina (Gerry/Cassadaga Valley) was 3rd in the triple jump (9.81 m), and Claire Holleran (Penfield) was 3rd in the 400 hurdles in 80.48. The 4x100 relay team of Dorsey, Murphy, Franchina and Votava was 2nd in 51.89 and the 4x400 relay team of Caitlin Hotchkiss (Springville), Murphy, Franchina, and Holleran was 2nd in 4:26.14.
Other top performances on the men's side included; Tyler Lehman (Wellsville) was 2nd in the 800 (2:03.50), Brian Edwards (Neversink/Tri-Valley) was 2nd in the shot put (14.17 m) and the discus (42.89 m), and Travis Nagle (Randolph) was T-2nd in the high jump (1.85 m) and 3rd in the pole vault (3.75 m). Hewlett was 3rd in the 100 (11.64), Rawle Crawford (Mt. Vernon) was 3rd in the 200 (22.34), and Garrison Koehler (Bath Haverling) was 4th in the 800 m (2:06.94). The 4x400 relay team of Lehman, Tubbs, Woodard, and Miller finished 2nd in 3:30.86.
SUNY Delhi won the men's regional title with 237 points followed by Alfred's 195. Herkimer CCC had 108, Mohawk Valley CC scored 62, and Finger Lakes CC had 52 to round out the team scoring.
Mohawk Valley won the women's title with 172 followed by Herkimer (158), Delhi (157), Alfred (129), and Finger Lakes (38).
The Pioneers now shift their attention to the 2012 NJCAA Division III National Championships which begin on Thursday at Pioneer Stadium in Alfred. The Pioneers are one of 24 teams scheduled to compete at the championships. The championships run from Thursday (5/3) to Saturday (5/5). This is the third time in the past four years that Alfred has hosted the event.
