Technology management students tour Alstom facility

Along the tour, students were connected with all phases of the creation of rail cars, from Web-based programming to live manufacturing.

A group of Alfred State technology management students got a first-hand glimpse into the world of manufacturing during a recent tour of the Alstom facility in Hornell.

According to the students’ instructor, Susan Gorman, a lecturer in the Business Department, the tour was part of an applied learning component that coincided with a manufacturing simulation that the students completed for the management technology innovation course.

Alfred State a family affair for the Harveys

Austin, Kylie, and Anthony HarveySince the fall of 2014, Anthony, 49, has been enrolled as a full-time student at the college after losing his job as a mechanic due to a factory closing. He initially began in the air conditioning and heating technology program on the Wellsville campus and quickly excelled, becoming an Honors Program student and graduating in 2016 with a 4.0 GPA.

On a typical weekday morning, Anthony Harvey hops into the driver’s seat of his vehicle to take his son, Austin, and daughter, Kylie, to class.

The family heads from the tiny Steuben County town of Cameron to the also-small Allegany County village of Alfred. The drive normally takes about 40 minutes.

Alfred State’s Day of Giving raises more than $150,000

The funds that were not restricted to a certain area will be used to support the greatest needs of the college, primarily scholarships, new programming, updated technology, and athletic programs.

Once again, Alfred State alumni, faculty, staff, students, and supporters came together to show their Pioneer Pride for Alfred State’s Day of Giving.

CCET workshop to address suicidal behaviors, self-injury

This workshop will include practical suggestions for assessing suicidal ideation, intent, plans, and related behaviors among children and adolescents. Non-suicidal self-injury, such as cutting, scratching, and burning, will also be discussed in detail.

Alfred State’s Center for Community Education and Training (CCET) will be hosting a workshop on assessing and managing suicidal behaviors and non-suicidal self-injury in children and adolescents from 1-4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 at the Lake Lodge in Alfred.

This workshop will include practical suggestions for assessing suicidal ideation, intent, plans, and related behaviors among children and adolescents. Non-suicidal self-injury, such as cutting, scratching, and burning, will also be discussed in detail.
