WNY Works builds skills to launch fulfilling careers

Three State University of New York (SUNY) colleges have joined forces to help employers eager to hire along with workers ready to learn the needed skills for advanced manufacturing careers.

As an avid home brewer, Alfred State faculty member Mark D’Arcy has long dreamed of having his own brew stand.

The cost of purchasing one, however, was more than the assistant professor of Mathematics and Physics cared to pay. One day, he was conversing about senior welding projects with George Merry, an assistant professor of Computerized Design and Manufacturing, who helped him to realize that his dream wasn’t as far off as he had thought.

“George told me he had a student, Tyler Jury, who was talented and needed a senior project,” D’Arcy said.

Bicycle Man earns national award with help from Alfred State students

The Bicycle Man’s Linear Roadster was voted “2016 BentRider Online Recumbent Bike of the Year.”Over the last decade, several Alfred State engineering students have lent their skills and know-how to The Bicycle Man, LLC, a full-service bicycle and recumbent bike shop in Alfred Station.

Emily ErdmannEmily Erdmann, an Alfred State senior drafting/CAD major from Whitesville, has recently been named a 2015-2016 Vanguard Student Recognition Award winner.

The award recognizes outstanding students who are enrolled in career and technical education (CTE) programs that prepare them for careers that are not traditional for their gender. Erdmann was one of four post-secondary education winners who were selected from a pool of nominees.

Gov. Cuomo announces approval of $500,000 grant for machinery, equipment at Advanced Manufacturing Center

Dr. Craig Clark, executive director of the Wellsville campus and dean of the School of Applied Technology, said, “These funds for machinery and equipment for the new facility will assure ‎Alfred State will teach the advanced technology required by manufacturers across the region.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced that the Empire State Development Corporation has approved a grant of up to $500,000 to be used as reimbursement for a portion of the costs of new machinery and equipment for Alfred State’s Advanced Manufacturing Center.
