Haines Earns Another Honor

Sweeney, Lewis, and Benton Run to All-Region Honors; Moore named Coach of the Year

John Sweeney (Barker), Brandon Lewis (Red Creek), and Abby Benton (Frewsburg) all raced to All-Region honors this weeked at the Region III Championships.  ASC Head Coach Gary Moore was also named the men's Region III Coach of the Year.

Sweeney and Lewis ran to first team honors with top five finishes.  Sweeney crossed the finish line of the 8k course in 29:12 to earn 4th place while Lewis finished in 29:22 to earn 5th.  The duo helped the Pioneers finish 2nd in the team rankings.  This is the second year in a row that Sweeney has earned All-Region honors.

Brooks Named Pre-Season All-American

Alfred State College sophomore basketball player Brittney Brooks (Elmira Free) has been named a 1st team pre-season NJCAA Division II All-American.  Brooks is one of two Region III athletes to be chosen for the honor.

Alfred State College sophomore basketball player Brittney Brooks (Elmira Free) has been named a 1st team pre-season NJCAA Division II All-American.  Brooks is one of two Region III athletes to be chosen for the honor.

Brooks returns for her sophomore campaign after averaging 18 points per game and nine rebounds last season.  She also averaged three assists and three steals per game.

During the 2008-09 season, Brooks was named the Region III Division II player of the year, 1st team All-Region, and a third team NJCAA Division II All-American.

Pioneers Battle Herkimer in Quarters

#8 seeded Alfred State College men's soccer team will travel to #1 Herkimer CCC for a Region III Division III quarterfinal match-up on Tuesday afternoon.  The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at Wehrum Stadium.

Herkimer enters the game 15-1-2 and ranked #2 in the NJCAA Division III poll while ASC is 8-6-1 on the year after defeating Jefferson CC on Saturday in a first round match-up 1-0 in overtime.

Lady Spikers Finish 1-2 at Regional Tournament

The #6 seeded Alfred State College volleyball team finished 1-2 in pool play at the Region III Division III Championships on Saturday.  The Lady Pioneers finish their 2009 campaign with a 20-14 overall record.

The Pioneers fell 25-19, 23-25, 14-25 to #3 Corning CC in their first match of pool play, fell in three close matches to #2 Erie CC, 23-25, 21-25, 23-25, and then defeated #7 Monroe CC, 16-25, 25-22, 25-15.

Men's Soccer Advances with OT Win

Kevin Arilotta (Churchville) found Masanari Yamamoto (Tokyo, Japan) with a nice crossing pass with 4:29 remaining in the first overtime to lift the Alfred State College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Jefferson CC in a Region III Division III Tournament first round contest.

The #8 seeded Pioneers and #9 seeded Cannoneers traded opportunities throughout regulation with both goalies making game-saving stops.

On the winning play, Arilotta took the ball to the far corner of the box and sent a cross that found the head of Yamamoto who was able to sneak it in the net.

Pioneers Rally Falls Short

Trailing 35-7 with under eleven minutes remaining Alfred State College put forth a valiant comeback but was unable to make it all the way back.  Dean College improves to 8-1 (3-1 NFC) with the 35-27 victory at Pioneer Stadium.

Alfred State and Dean traded touchdown drives early in the second quarter but the Bulldogs would erase a 7-6 deficit by scoring the next 29 points.

Men's Cross Country Finishes Second at Regionals

The Alfred State College men's cross country team finished second out of seven teams at the Region III Championships held at SUNY Delhi on Saturday.  The women's team was incomplete after the flu-bug ravished the team.

John Sweeney (Barker) led the way for the blue & gold with a 4th place finish.  He ran the 8k course in 29:12.  He was followed in by Brandon Lewis (Red Creek) finished 5th (29:22).  Derek Snyder (Bath) finished 11th (29:50), Joe Seitz (Williamsville North) finished 18th (30:32), Alex Farrell (N. Tonawanda) was 19th (30:32).
