Men's Cross Country Finishes Second at Regionals

The Alfred State College men's cross country team finished second out of seven teams at the Region III Championships held at SUNY Delhi on Saturday.  The women's team was incomplete after the flu-bug ravished the team.

The Alfred State College men's cross country team finished second out of seven teams at the Region III Championships held at SUNY Delhi on Saturday.  The women's team was incomplete after the flu-bug ravished the team.

John Sweeney (Barker) led the way for the blue & gold with a 4th place finish.  He ran the 8k course in 29:12.  He was followed in by Brandon Lewis (Red Creek) finished 5th (29:22).  Derek Snyder (Bath) finished 11th (29:50), Joe Seitz (Williamsville North) finished 18th (30:32), Alex Farrell (N. Tonawanda) was 19th (30:32).

SUNY Delhi won the regional title with 19 points followed by ASC's 55.  The second place finish was the best finish by a men's team since 2002.  Mohawk Valley CC finished 3rd (82), Erie CC was 4th (104), Broome CC (135), Finger Lakes CC (152), and Herkimer CCC (208).

ASC had entered the race ranked #3 in the latest NJCAA Division III poll.  Delhi came in ranked #1 and Mohawk Valley CC was #2.

The ASC women's team had just four runners compete in the 5k course.  Abby Benton (Frewsburg) was the top finisher.  She finished 10th (22:27).  Laura Babcock (Wellsville) was 19th (23:17), Bridget McMahon (Avoca) was 21st (23:28), and Allynne O'Hearn (Pelham, NH) finished 29th (24:54).

The Pioneers now shift their focus to the NJCAA Division III National Championships which will take place next Saturday (11/7) at Finger Lakes CC.
