Room Selection & Deadlines

Choosing your room and finding your roommate makes life on campus feel like home.

Returning and transfer students have the first choice each semester, and then we turn our attention to assisting new students. Remember that applying for housing is only one step. Next, you make your room selection when all available rooms are listed for you in the housing portal.

Need help finding a good roommate? RoomeeZ allows students to opt-in to a private social network to search for, connect with, and request roommates all in one place. Alfred State’s Res Life staff is here to help you every step of the way.

Group Housing Process and Information

  • The group process allows a group to sign up for a MacKenzie Rowhouse, MacKenzie Commons Apartment, Townhouse, MacKenzie Rowhouse, or Main Gate Suite for the 2026-2027 academic year.
  • Group sizes can range from 1 to 12 people.
  • Groups can be COED (male, female, or non-binary persons living together). Those wishing to live in a COED area must agree to this option later in the form.
  • Areas with single rooms include MacKenzie Commons Apartments and Townhouses. All other areas contain double occupancy rooms.
  • If your group does not fill the space in which it is placed, another group may be added to fill the remaining pace. Combined groups will be matched based on group criteria such as single gender or COED.
  • The Office of College Housing cannot guarantee placement for all groups. Placement depends on the number of applicants and available space.
  • Groups placed through the group process do not need to sign up for rooms during individual sign-ups.
  • Students who leave a group placement are not guaranteed to be returned to their previous placement.
  • Groups are scored and placed based on a matrix that includes:
    • Years in residence
    • GPA
    • Accrued credit hours
    • Judicial history (negative score)

Room Designation

Designated singles exist only in the MacKenzie Complex, the Townhouses, and in Getman Single Deluxe. All other rooms are double rooms that may occasionally be available for purchase as a single accommodation.

With approval from appropriate college personnel, residents without roommates may petition to purchase a double room as a single accommodation.

If permission is granted, payment to the Student Records and Financial Services Office must be made within 24 hours of approval. Relocation may not occur until permission is granted by the Residence Director. A single accommodation in a double room during the fall or spring semester does not guarantee the same benefit in future semesters.

RoomeeZ Roommate Matching

Once your application is complete follow these steps to create your RoomeeZ Profile.

  1. Turn on your profile under “My roommate profile.”
  2. Fill out the required fields on your roommate profile.
  3. Select which information you want shared with other students.
  4. Enter any social media and contact information you want to share.
Open Room Changes

Space permitting, open room changes will occur during the first or second week of each semester.

Students will be notified when open room changes will be conducted via Student Announce, email, and fliers throughout the building.

Room Consolidations

The college will initiate room consolidations when residence hall vacancies occur. The general policy states, when vacancies occur in any residence hall in a double room creating a 'single,' the college will request the remaining student to take a new roommate or move to another room. This may occur through no fault of the affected student.

The college reserves the right to require relocation or to assign any student to any vacant bed at any time. Thus, the remaining resident must not utilize both sides of the room should a vacancy occur.

Failure to comply with required relocation may result in campus discipline.

Over-21 Residential Designation

Individual apartments/suites may request specific designation as an Over-21 accommodation if all residents meet the required age designation at the time of application. Students residing in designated Over -21 accommodations may enjoy specific privileges accorded to that lifestyle option.

Approval of an Over-21 application is at the discretion of the Assistant Director of College Housing and the status may be rescinded at any time. This will include verifying judicial status for drug and alcohol violations. In the event of a roster change, all residents must continue to be over the age of 21 for the apartment/suite to maintain an Over -21 designation.

Living Off-Campus

How do I search for housing?

Moving Off-Campus: Step by Step

Decide if you would like to live off-campus. Be sure to check that you are eligible to live off-campus and complete the Campus Housing Waiver Application which can be found by logging into your my.alfredstate.edu, select Sign up for housing, and forms. Students may choose to move off-campus for various reasons, but it is a decision based on personal preference and needs. If approved, students can proceed with the following steps.

Speak with other students you may like to live with, or decide if you would like to live alone. If you don't know anyone that wants to live off-campus but you still do, don't fear! There are many properties who offer single rooms/apartments. Search the AlfredApartments.com or look for posters around campus and the village advertising apartments for rent. There are also several apartment complexes in Alfred that usually have space available every year, such as AlfredRental.com. Explore your options and pick a few places that interest you.

Contact the landlords of these places and indicate that you are interested in viewing their property. It's important to visit the apartment in person to decide if it's the right fit for you. This is also an opportunity to inspect the property and ask the landlord questions about living there, such as utilities, lease duration, security deposits, and when and how payment is due.

Once you decide where you would like to live, contact your future landlord immediately and set a time to sign the lease. Most landlords also require a deposit currently.

Congratulations! You're ready to move off-campus.

Rate My Landlord

We're excited to announce that we are now advertising the use of Rate My Landlord, an online database used to rate rental properties! This website allows off-campus residents to submit their own reviews and read reviews that others have written. This is an invaluable tool when searching for an apartment.
