ACES partners with Restaurant Technologies to recycle cooking oil

Auxiliary Campus Enterprises and Services (ACES) has partnered with Restaurant Technologies on a new cooking oil recycling program at three Alfred State’s dining venues.

Restaurant Technologies delivers fresh clean oil at the same time as picking up the used cooking oil to eliminate double trucks on campus. It also provides a safe way for ACES employees to handle cooking oil both fresh and used.

Perry’s Ice Cream is scooped up by students at “The Nook”

Alfred State strengthened the relationship between the college, Perry’s Ice Cream, and 1985 alum Brian Perry with the opening of the newest food location on campus, “The Nook”.

At the ribbon cutting for the new space, Alfred State President Dr. Steve Mauro stated, “This all starts with a partnership, and it is tailored from hearing what our students want. Our students wanted ice cream, so birthed ‘The Nook’ and what better of a partner to do this than with than Brian Perry and Perry’s Ice Cream.”

“We asked our students how we can serve their needs better. We took their feedback and were able to create ‘The Nook.’ We have received positive feedback from our students, and we are ecstatic to continue and build on our relationship with Perry’s Ice Cream.”

Alfred State in partnership with ACES and Perry’s Ice Cream will celebrate the opening of the newest food offering on campus, “The Nook”. Located on the ground floor of the Central Dining Hall, “The Nook” is across from Amigos and Alfie’s.

Alfred State President Dr. Steve Mauro will be joined by Perry’s Ice Cream Executive Vice President and Chairman Brian Perry, ’85, and ACES Executive Director Jonna Anne for the event.

For a college that usually has more than 4,000 students, faculty, and staff, the current campus population of under 100 people shows how efforts to reduce population density have worked at Alfred State College (ASC). 

The smaller number of people allows for more social distancing as the vast majority of students and faculty are now working at home. Even as the number of clients has diminished, however, dining services at ASC have chosen to grow the menu at Alfie’s on campus.

A sweet history of success

Brian PerryBrian Perry, the executive vice president, chairman, and an owner of Perry’s, is both a fourth-generation member of the 100-year-old business, as well as a second-generation Alfred State Pioneer.

Ice cream lovers are well acquainted with the name Perry’s.

They see it at the grocery store or at their favorite ice cream shop while perusing the many flavors as they attempt to make that crucial decision: Fireball or Panda Paws™. No wait, maybe Let’s Dough Buffalo™, or perhaps even Mint-Ting-A-Ling.

While Perry’s Ice Cream aficionados may be very familiar with the company, what they might not be aware of, however, is the role that Alfred State College has played in its success.

Student leads initiative to discourage use of plastic bags on campus

Peter York is pictured with one of the reusable bags Looking to the future, York said, “My end vision is to completely eliminate single-use plastic bags on Alfred State’s campus and create a sustainably minded culture while doing so.”

As a civic engagement advocate for campus sustainability, student Peter York has led an initiative to deter the use of single-use plastic bags at Alfred State College.

Over the past few months, York, a construction management major from Akron, has worked with a number of stakeholders across campus to raise awareness about environmental damage caused by single-use plastic bags and discourage their use.

ACES celebrating 70th anniversary

The organization also owns and manages the Lake Lodge in Alfred Station. 

Reinvention is the key to longevity in business if Alfred State’s Auxiliary Campus Enterprises and Service Inc. (ACES) is any example. This fall, the company is celebrating its 70th year in business.

At ACES, reinvention means that every fall the company has to renew itself to appeal to its new crop of customers. ACES is a not-for-profit company that supports the education mission of Alfred State.

Alfred State rolls out new ‘Feast Beast’ food truck

Food truck mania will sweep over Alfred State this fall, ushered in by the arrival of “The Feast Beast,” the college’s first mobile dining venue.
