New Horizons Forum to feature Debra Quinn and ALS

The forum will be held at 6:30 p.m. in Room 215 of the Engineering Technology Building and is open to the public. A reception will be held at 6 p.m. in the lobby of the Engineering Technology Building.

The Alfred State’s New Horizons Forum scheduled for Thursday, April 11, 2013, will feature Debra (McQueen) Quinn who will present on Sporadic & Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). ALS, also called “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a fatal neurodegenerative disease for which there is no known cause or cure. The forum will be held at 6:30 p.m. in Room 215 of the Engineering Technology Building and is open to the public. A reception will be held at 6 p.m. in the lobby of the Engineering Technology Building.

Sport Management Students Compete in Chapel Hill, NC

College Sport Research Institution teamA team of four Alfred State sport management students has been selected by the College Sport Research Institution (CSRI) to compete in the 2013 Undergraduate Student Case Study Competition in Chapel Hill, NC, on April 17.

A team of four Alfred State Dr. Rhema Fuller, assistant professor, sport management, is the faculty advisor for the team. Alfred State has been named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, one of the highest honors a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement.

Kickball Tournament to Benefit Hornell Concern for Youth, April 20

The tournament will take place on Saturday, April 20 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park (James Street Park). Participating teams represent local police and fire personnel, college students, and fraternal organizations.

Alfred State Michael Colomaio presents a $150 donation from the Knights of Columbus to the student organizers of the kickball tournament, John Albrecht and Curtis Combs. Both students are interning at the Hornell Area Concern for Youth, the organization benefiting from proceeds of this fundraising event. Colomaio is also a member of the Concern for Youth’s board of directors.

Finished Transcription to be donated to the Library of Congress

A piece of American history was captured at Alfred State last week when court reporting instructor Danielle Green transcribed an oral account of World War II given by area veteran Paul Gerling, 87, of Wayland, NY.

Green transcribed Gerling’s oral account using the state-of-the art tools of court reporting professionals. The account was simultaneously transcribed and videotaped while Gerling was interviewed by his daughter, greendr@alfredstate.edu.

Alfred State Pioneer Woodsmen’s won first place in the men’s division and first place in the mixed Jack and Jill division in the spring opener Collegiate Woodsmen competition held recently at SUNY Cobleskill, Feb. 16. The Woodsmen’s will compete again on March 23 in Syracuse, followed by a championship competition in Canandaigua, April 19-20.The Pioneer Woodsmen’s is a student organization that studies the ideas, tools, and techniques of the competitive lumberjack community.
