ASC alum earns award for photo in Rochester exhibition

Alfred State engineering science alumnus Walter Jakubowski recently earned the Juror’s Award for his abstract photograph currently on display at a show in Rochester.

Alfred State engineering science alumnus Walter Jakubowski recently earned the Juror’s Award for his abstract photograph currently on display at a show in Rochester.

According to an article by The Batavia Daily News, Jakubowski’s submission, titled “River of Gold,” is a micro photo from an old industrial building on Harvester Avenue in Batavia. The piece can be viewed at the “Magic of Light” show, which is taking place through Jan. 24 at the Image City Photography Gallery, 722 University Ave. in Rochester.

Major Gift Donor Spotlight: Alan and Mary Ellen Hunt

Mary Ellen and Alan HuntThe couple’s endowment fund helps building trades, automotive trades, and heavy equipment students at the Wellsville campus further their education.

Alfred State Major Gift donors Alan and Mary Ellen Hunt decided to establish an endowment fund at the college as a big way to give back, not only to the school but to its students, as well.

Both Alan and Mary Ellen are Alfred State alumni, Alan having graduated in 1979 with a degree in computer information systems, and Mary Ellen having earned her executive secretarial studies degree in 1980. The pair would meet years later at a wedding for a mutual Alfred State Pioneer and marry in 1987.

Alfred State alumni host food drive

A group of Alfred State alumni recently held a food drive at Diversion Brewing Co. in Chemung to help families dealing with food insecurity resulting from COVID-19.

A group of Alfred State alumni recently held a food drive at Diversion Brewing Co. in Chemung to help families dealing with food insecurity resulting from COVID-19.

According to an article by WENY, more than 30 people donated food within the first hour. The event was created by members of Alfred State’s Finger Lakes Alumni Chapter.

When Tami Maglier headed to work on Saturday, March 21, she didn’t expect to have much business.

Maglier, who holds a degree in floriculture merchandising from Alfred State College, is the owner of Tami’s Floral Expressions, located at 24 Jefferson St. in Wellsville. With her business and many others around New York State set to close amid growing concerns over the COVID-19 virus, Maglier knew this would be her shop’s last day to be open for a while and she wasn’t anticipating a big day.

Alfred State alum, Paychex founder Tom Golisano authors new book

Tom Golisano interviewed on Fox newsAn entrepreneur, philanthropist, and civic leader, Golisano graduated from Alfred State in 1962 with a degree in general business management. In 1971, he founded Paychex, a leading national provider of payroll, human resource, and benefit outsourcing solutions for more than a half-million small and medium-sized businesses.

In a new book released earlier this week, Alfred State alumnus and Paychex founder Tom Golisano details his path to success in the business world and the valuable lessons he learned along the way.

According to the Golisano Foundation, “Built, Not Born: A Self-Made Billionaire’s No-Nonsense Guide for Entrepreneurs,” provides “no-nonsense, often humorous advice on how to succeed in all phases of business ownership.” Golisano recently spoke about his new book on an episode of “Fox and Friends,” including recognition of his Alfred State degree.
