The urban design minor is intended to expand the specialized knowledge of students enrolled in baccalaureate degree programs at Alfred State to focus on designing and shaping the physical features of cities, towns, and villages. This interdisciplinary minor will provide an understanding of urban design – the blending of architecture, landscape architecture, and city planning together to make urban areas functional and attractive – and add an important skill set to the credentials of graduates who will receive instruction in urban planning, design theory and practice, and technical areas such as remediation, transportation, adaptive reuse, and real estate development. Satisfactory completion of this coursework will broaden employment opportunities for graduates to include economic development, design consulting, municipal government, real estate development and non-profit organizations. Students are required to declare this minor upon acceptance or continuation into the third year of a baccalaureate degree program.
