Athletic Coaching

The Business Department offers a minor in athletic coaching online to students who wish to develop coaching skills and knowledge while majoring in another discipline. This minor is available to any bachelor degree student who is completing a degree.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Explain all of the finite areas that impact coaches and their ability to coach.
  • Review various areas which impact coaching both on and off the field of play.
  • Differentiate the variety of athletes they may experience as coaches and how they react to various athletic environments and create policies and procedures to govern athletic participation by these athletes.
  • Select coaching strategies that will create a positive environment for their athletes.
  • Develop planning and management techniques that create an effective efficient atmosphere.
  • Articulate major legal aspects that impact coaching as a profession.
  • Examine self-assessments to develop an understanding of oneself with respect to ethics, values and leadership style.
  • Review major leadership theories and to assess and develop such theories to promote leadership growth for themselves and their athletes.
  • Analyze techniques of highly successful coaching leaders to understand what makes them so effective.
  • Compare and contrast various models of coaching leadership with respect to organizational differences.

Declaration requirements: Minimum of 30 hours completed with a GPA of 2.0 or higher
