CNC Manufacturing and Machining Student Required Tool List

The following is the first-year student tool list. These tools are not available at the campus bookstore. It is strongly recommended that these tools be insured under the parents' or student's homeowner's insurance.

These tools must be of the Starrett, Mitutoyo, or Brown & Sharp brand:

  1. 0-3" outside micrometers
  2. ½ - 4" telescoping gauge set
  3. Universal dial test indicator (button type)

Consider lower cost brands for these tools:

  1. Scriber set
  2. Center punch set
  3. Brass hammer
  4. Combination square set
  5. 3/8 - 1 1/8" wrench set
  6. 0-1" dial indicator with mighty magnetic base
  7. 60° center gauge
  8. Edge finder
  9. Radius gauge set
  10. 5 pieces - ½" x 4" high speed cutting tools (5% cobalt)
  11. 5 pieces - 5/16" x 2" high speed cutting tools
  12. Drill set with index (fraction, number, and letter)
  13. Wire brush
  14. 2" chip brush (wood handle)
  15. 8" mill/bastard file with handle
  16. 8" thread file with handle
  17. Center drill set (#1-#5)
  18. Allen wrench sets (metric and fractional)
  19. Tap wrenches (small and medium)
  20. Rou-a-burr (also called a twist-a-burr)
  21. Divider
  22. Calculator: Texas Instrument ti-30xa
  23. Hermaphrodite calipers
  24. India stone (medium)
  25. Rolling tool box
  26. Ballpeen hammer
  27. Channel lock and needle nose (small)
  28. Feeler gauges
  29. ¾" 82° countersink
  30. 1/2" & 3/4" end mill
  31. Depth micrometer 0-3 inch
  32. General Protractor
  33. Dial Caliper
  34. 6" steel rule, 4R with 1/8", 1/16", 1/32", 1/64" increments

Required Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)

Steel-toed work boots, safety glasses with Z87 approved side shields (prescription glasses must have Z87 approved side shields), long pants (no shorts)

Textbooks:

Important information regarding the Machinist Handbook. This book will be needed for both the first year and senior year courses. Students should not turn in this book until completion of the program.
