The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program was established in 1978 to honor the late senator and vice president Hubert H. Humphrey for his lifelong commitment to international cooperation and public service. This specialized non-degree program provides professionals from countries with developing and emerging economies an opportunity to enhance their leadership capacity.

The Cornell fellows focus on three, often overlapping, areas of interest: agriculture, rural development, and natural resource management. The Fellows not only strengthen their knowledge and skills through an academic year of Cornell coursework, internships, seminars and more — they also collaborate on projects with faculty and students and, primarily through their 6-week professional affiliations, with public and private organizations around the USA.

The Cornell Fellows have had a long-standing partnership with Alfred State College which has led to rewarding educational exchanges and exciting collaborative projects. The 2024-25 fellows represent Gabon, Central African Republic, Bangladesh, Chad, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Mali, India, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Suriname.

“Coordinating this visit and engaging with the CALS Humphrey Fellows is a highlight for me every year,” commented Director of Global Engagement and Civic Wellbeing Cyan Corwine. “I am always left inspired and encouraged by the exchanges that happen between our campus and the Fellows and am incredibly grateful to our campus partners and the CALS Humphrey Fellow leadership team that help me keep this collaboration strong.”

During their visit to Alfred State, the fellows visited a variety of classes that included Sustainable Fruit Production, Mechanical Design Principles, Intercultural Communications, Botany, and Global and Diverse Perspectives. They also toured the School of Applied Technology and the college farm.
