Alfred State hosts 37th annual sophomore career day

Four hundred and fifty sophomores from ten different school districts participated in the 37th annual sophomore career day held at Alfred State. The event run by the Career Development Council from GST BOCES allowed students to explore multiple career paths.

After a keynote address by ASC Online Academic Success Coach Christy Schmitt, students chose four career paths to explore. Presenters from various local businesses and organizations spoke on their professions to give students insight on their journey to their profession, what the profession entails, and answered any questions the students might have.

“Alfred State is proud to partner with the Career Development Council, GST BOCES and area high schools for this great event,” commented Assistant Director of the Center for Extended Learning Tammy Edwards. “Sophomores are just starting the process of thinking about college and different career opportunities. It is great to have them on our campus and have the learn about various professions.”

Students explored career opportunities including but not limited to arts/music, culinary, education, engineering, law enforcement, manufacturing, and physical therapy. 

Alfred State professors Jessica Hutchison (agriculture), Dan Helveston (building trades), Megan Smith (veterinary science), and Evan Enke (web development) were four of the twenty-five different presenters.

Students from Addison, Avoca, Bath Haverling, Bradford, Campbell-Savona, Canaseraga, Hammondsport, Hornell, Jasper-Troupsburg, and Prattsburgh participated in the program.

The Career Development Council’s mission is to prepare learners for transition to employment by connecting the education and business sectors to deliver career development services that promote career awareness, exploration, and choices.
