At a glance

On Sept. 11, 2001, almost 3,000 people lost their lives during the attacks at the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and aboard United Airlines Flight 93. Twenty-two years later, Alfred State continues to honor these victims and their families. We also remember the heroic efforts of first responders who endangered their lives answering the call.

Alfred State’s commitment to our Principles of Community and our focus in and out of the classroom on civic engagement are reflections of what many around the world did following this world-changing day. We are proud to be an academic community dedicated to fostering personal and professional integrity, civility, and inclusion while supporting our community to give back to each other.

Flags on campus today will be lowered to half-staff. The Hinkle Belltower will toll 22 times (in honor of the 22nd anniversary) at 8:46 a.m. and will play a rotation of patriotic songs at 50 past each hour until 7:50 p.m. We encourage all faculty, staff, and students to pause and participate in the national moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time that the first tower was struck.

You might consider ways to serve others during this time of remembrance. The Corporation for National and Community Service outlines specific ideas at this link.

On campus, one way to help is to donate needed items for The Plate Food Pantry (non-perishable food/personal care items) and the Community Needs Hub (warm coats, scarves, clothing in general). Donations for both may be dropped off in the donation bin on the third floor entrance (near CDH) of the Student Leadership Center.

Sincerely,
