Alfred State College is proud to announce that two of its students, Emily Clough and Errol Mars, have been named recipients of the Vanguard Award for the 2020-2021 academic year.

This honor recognizes outstanding post-secondary-level students enrolled in career and technical education (CTE) programs that prepare them for careers that are not traditional for their gender. A nontraditional career is an occupation where one sex comprises fewer than 25 percent of the total employed.

Clough is an electrical construction and maintenance electrician student from Hornell. Mars is a culinary arts: baking, production and management major from Bronx.

The Vanguard Award is administered by the New York State Nontraditional Employment and Training (NET) Project, Center for Women in Government and Civil Society and is sponsored by the New York State Department through a Carl D. Perkins grant. To be considered for the award, students must be nominated by faculty/staff of nontraditional CTE programs.

Clough and Mars will be among the eight students honored during the Vanguard Award Ceremony that will be held virtually at the Nontraditional Employment (NET) Conference in April. Alfred State College will also honor Clough and Mars during its upcoming virtual Honors Convocation in April.
