11th Annual Regional Science and Technology FairStudent displays from seven local school districts (Allegany-Limestone, Bolivar-Richburg, Prattsburgh, Hinsdale, Genesee Valley Central, Naples, Belmont BOCES, and one home-schooled student) were judged at Alfred State College’s 11th Annual Regional Science and Technology Fair. Seventy-five science and technology projects were on display for judging and public viewing. Participants were divided into senior (10-12), junior (grades 7-9), and novice grade categories.

Winners in the senior division included first place ($250) –Nakita Simons and Meagan Hilsdorf, (Prattsburgh), with “Conservation of Momentum the Effect of Object Orientation;” second place ($150) – Taylor Kent (Hinsdale), with “Calorimetry;” and third place ($100) – Alison Patronek and Jericca Linderman (Hinsdale) with “Science of Silence.”

Winners in the Junior Division included first place ($250) – Jonathan Cledgett (Hinsdale), with “Sounds Good to Me;” second place ($150) – Thomas Jackson (Hinsdale) with “Rotational Inertia;” and third place ($100) –Melissa Harris (Hinsdale) with “No Burnt Cookies.”

Winners in the Novice Division included first place ($50)- Nolan Coble (Genesee Valley Central School) with “Gestures=Personality;” second place ($25)- Emily Johnson and Mackenzie Morehouse (Genesee Valley Central School) with “Which Metal Rusts the Fastest?” and third place ($15)- Mariah Swarthout (Genesee Valley Central School) with “Stalactites and Stalagmites.”

Best Junior Division School Winner: (Silver Tray) - Hinsdale

Best Senior Division School Winner: (Silver Tray) –Prattsburgh,

The Grand Prize ($500) was captured by Michael Dimarco (Hinsdale) with “Microwaves and Plants.”

Each participant received a certificate of participation, and individual ribbons were presented to first-, second-, and third-place prize winners in all divisions. The competition was sponsored ACES (Alfred State dining, vending, and transportation purveyors), Alstom Transportation, Student Senate, Physical and Health Sciences, Physics and Career Pathways.

Judges for this year’s event were ASC faculty and staff members James Buell, Earl Packard, Garth Grantier, Wayne Bensley, Ray Gleason, David Kendall, Jerry Fong, Mike Putnam, Steve Jakobi, Chris Young, Mark Amman, and Cindy Thorp; guest judges were Chris Winans, Bill Condon, and Dr. Frank Thiel.
