The Alfred State College track and field program had a banner year culminating at the NJCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships. At the National Championships the women's team brought home the National Title for the first time in school history while the men finished as the National runner-ups.
The Alfred State College track and field program had a banner year culminating at the NJCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships. At the National Championships the women's team brought home the National Title for the first time in school history while the men finished as the National runner-ups.
The success of the team began in January when the Pioneers began the indoor season. Both the men and women won the Region III indoor championship and six members of the team represented ASC at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships.
The cold, snowy, and wet weather that slowed down the beginning part of the outdoor season didn't stop the Pioneers. The team continued their roll when they were able to compete winning the Howard (MD) Invitational and the Erie CC Invitational. Success continued as the Pioneers won both the men's and women's Regional titles in preparation for Nationals.
At the three-day National Championship, Alfred State had 13 All-American performances with 14 different athletes earning first or second team honors.
Angie Corby (Horseheads) led the way with All-American honors in four events. She won the 400 hurdles (1:10.02) to earn 1st team honors and was 2nd in the 100 hurdles (16.66), and the pole vault (3.02 m). She was also a member of the 4 x 800 relay team that finished 2nd (10:35.72). In that race she teamed with Jen Chan (Genesee Valley), Nicole D'Andrea (Rush Henrietta), and Kim Lockwood (Olean).
Dan Harris (Rochester/Edison) highlighted the men's side with two individual 1st place finishes, 100 (10.77) and 200 (21.88), and a 1st place finish in the 4 x 100 relay (41.66). In the relay he teamed with Robert Riley (Rochester/Edison), Alvin Fleming (Eastridge), and John Chisolm (Burlington, NJ).
Jacquie Holmberg (Falconer) was a double first team All-American honors by winning both the discus (40.71 m) and the hammer throw (44.06).
Andy Omoregie (Gates Chili) won the 110 hurdles to earn 1st team All-American honors as well. He finished in 15.04.
Laura Anderson (Livonia) registered 2,934 points in the heptathlon competition to earn 2nd place and 2nd team All-American honors. Dan Foley (Irondequoit) finished in 2nd in the high jump (1.91 m), Zak Williamson (Rocky Point) finished 2nd in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:52.08), and Matt Hand (Genesee Valley) earned a 2nd place finish in the hammer throw (46.09 m).
The women's team scored 123 points and was 30 points better than Gloucester (NJ) CC and SUNY Cobleskill who tied for 2nd. The National Championship is the first for the women's program in school history (the men's team won the national championships in 2000).
The men's team scored 129 points and only Harper (IL) College finished ahead of them with 142.
Alfred State College head coach Gary Moore was also honored at the end of the meet by being named the Women's Coach of the Meet.
