The 2008 Alfred State Fall Sports Awards Banquet was held recently and the following people took home the hardware.

Noyd, Vargas, Speaker Receive AwardsTravis Noyd (Endicott) earned baseball's Most Valuable Pitcher.  Noyd was 3-1 with an ERA of 2.33 in the fall baseball season.  Berto Vargas (New York) was named Most Valuable Position Player for the fall baseball season.  Vargas batted .526 with three doubles, three triples, one homerun and 18 RBI.  Taking home Most Dedicated Player honors was Derek Speaker (Starpoint).  Speaker batted .288 with two doubles and nine RBI all while playing multiple defensive positions.

2008 Football Team AwardsDeAndre Johnson (Detroit, MI) was named football's Most Valuable Player.  Johnson eclipsed the 1,000 yard rushing mark averaging 121 yards per game.  He also played quarterback, completing 43% of his passes for 546 yards and eight touchdowns.  Geoff Hicks (Cheektowaga) was named Offensive Back of the Year.  Hicks caught 10 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns.  He also passed for 787 yards and seven touchdowns.  Jeff Gamble (Pioneer) was named Offensive Lineman of the Year.  Clifton Krotz (Cattaraugus) earned Defensive Back of the Year.  Krotz had 50 tackles and two sacks.  Taking home Defensive Lineman of the Year was Michael Gee (Englewood, NJ).  Gee had 34 tackles with six sacks and two forced fumbles.  Defensive Player of the Year was Matt Perry(Belle Vernon, PA).  Perry led the team with 57 tackles and two forced fumbles.

Schmidbauer, Ligoci & Fung With Cross Country AwardsTaking home Most Valuable Runner for the men's cross country team was John Sweeney (Barker).  Sweeney earned All-American honors with a 9th place finish at the National Championship race.  Earning Most Improved Runner for the men was Josh Schmidbauer (Middleport).  Schmidbauer was able to shave off almost six minutes from the first race of the season.  Earning Co-Most Valuable Runner for the women's cross country team was Ashley Fung (Greenwich) and Kaleigh Ligoci (Cicero North Syracuse).  Fung earned All-American honors with a 12th place finish at Nationals while Ligoci was an All-American with a 13th place finish at Nationals.

Smith, Rath & Matteson With Women's Soccer AwardsThe women's soccer team named Jessie Smith (Fredonia) its Offensive MVP.  Smith finished the season with 13 goals and eight assists as well as All-WNYAC and All-Region III honors.  Audrey Rath (Medina) took home Defensive MVP honors.  Rath had one assist as well as All-WNYAC and All-Region III honors while heading up a defense that allowed a mere 1.21 goals against average.  Jackie Matteson (Greece-Arcadia) was awarded the Coaches Award. 

Drake & Curran Receive Men's Soccer AwardsCaleb Drake (Jasper-Troupsburg) took home the men's soccer Offensive MVP.  Drake scored five goals and had three assists for the Pioneers while earning All-WNYAC and All-Region III honors.  Taking home Defensive MVP honors was Hiroshi Ozaki (Tokyo, Japan).  Ozaki had two goals while leading the defense to a 1.10 goals agains average.  Ozaki also earned All-WNYAC and All-Region III honors.  The Coaches Award went to Alex Curran (Williamson).  Curran had one goal and five assists on the season.

The Women's Volleyball TeamThe volleyball team was also honored at the banquet.  Individual honors will be announced in early December.

Athletes at Alfred State this fall accumulated 73-29-1 overall record.  The men's cross country team finished 3rd in the nation, the volleyball team 4th, and the women's cross country team 5th.  At one time this fall, five of the Pioneers teams were ranked in the NJCAA national poll.
