Volleyball Finishes 2nd at Jefferson Tourney

The Alfred State College volleyball team was undefeated (4-0) heading into the championship game of the Jefferson CC but lost a hard fought battle to Jamestown CC (25-15, 25-27, 10-15) in the finals.  The Lady Pioneers are now 9-1 on the season.

In pool play, ASC downed SUNY Delhi (25-20 & 25-6), Jamestown CC (25-23, 19-25, 15-10), and Jefferson CC (25-10, 25-16) to advance to championship play.  In the semis, the Pioneers defeated Corning CC, 25-12, 25-15.

Cross Country wins ASC Invitational

The Alfred State College men's cross country team won their own invitational as they opened up the 2008 season.  Alfred State's John Sweeney (Barker) won the men's race while Lady Pioneer Ashley Fung (Greenwich) won the women's race.

In the men's 8K race, Alfred State scored 34 points, Broome CC finished with 52 points, Belmont Abbey College finished 3rd (63), and Finger Lakes CC finished 4th (80).  Erie CC did not field a full team.

Men's Soccer defeats Jefferson CC

Alfred State scored twice in the first three minutes as they took control of the contest en route to a 5-0 victory over Jefferson CC.  The Pioneers, ranked #13 in Division III of the NJCAA, have now won four straight and improve to 5-1 on the season while the Cannoneers fall to 0-4.

Jason Durst (Gates Chili) scored 24 seconds in from Caleb Drake (Jasper Troupsburg).  Durst made it a two-goal lead less than three minutes later.  Masanari Yamamoto (Tokyo, Japan) made it 3-0 late in the half when he scored from Matt Kooy (Caledonia Mumford).

Women's Soccer falls to Jefferson CC

After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, Jefferson CC scored four unanswered goals en route to a 4-2 victory in a Region III Division III match-up played on ASC's new field on campus.  The Lady Pioneers are now 2-2 on the season while JCC is now 4-0 on the season.

Jessie Smith (Fredonia) got the Blue and Gold on the board with 16:31 remaining in the 1st half.

Emily Nellis tied the game five minutes later and sent the game into halftime tied at 1-1. 

Rain Washes Out Baseball

Saturday afternoon's Alfred State baseball doubleheader versus Niagara CCC has been cancelled due to persistent rain.  The two teams will try to get the game in on Tuesday (9/16) afternoon at 1 p.m.

Q & A with Alex Curran

Alfred State College sophomore Alex Curran (Williamson) has recorded four assists for the men's soccer team thus far.  Curran, a two-sport athlete at ASC (soccer & track and field), sat down and answered a few questions about the 2008 soccer team and life as a college athlete.

Pioneers down Lakers

The #13 ranked Alfred State College men's soccer team won their 3rd straight contest on Thursday afternoon by defeating #12 Finger Lakes CC 3-2.  With the win the Pioneers improve to 4-1 while the Lakers suffer their first defeat and fall to 4-1.

Caleb Drake (Jasper Troupsburg) scored the lone goal in the first half at 32:42 when he scored on a free kick.

Koya Takadama (Soma, Japan) gave A-State a 2-0 lead at 54:00 when he scored after a corner kick.  Masanari Yamamoto (Tokyo, Japan) and Justin Handley (Iroquois) were credited with assists.

After a quick 3-1 start the men's soccer team has earned the #13 ranking in the first NJCAA Division III poll of the regular season.  The Pioneers have outscored opponents 14 to 9 on the season and 11 to 5 in their last two victories.

Other Region III colleges included in the the poll are #4 Herkimer CC, #5 Hudson Valley CC (the Vikings defeated ASC 3-1 on 8/31), #9 Genesee (ASC downed the Cougars 6-5 on 9/4), and #12 Finger Lakes CC (ASC squares off with the Lakers on 9/11).

The Alfred State College volleyball team is ranked #7 in the first NJCAA Division III poll of the 2008.  The Lady Pioneers are currently 5-0 after winning the Mohawk Valley CC Tournament last Saturday.

ASC's Taste of Wellsville Event, Saturday, Oct. 11

Local eateries will once again participate in Alfred State College's "Taste of Wellsville," this year, Saturday, Oct. 11, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.  Restaurants and other food purveyors will showcase their tasty signature dishes in "miniature form" at stations around the Applied Technology Campus.

Tickets for the food (50 cents each-food costs may range from one ticket to several) may be purchased on the day of the event. Ten percent of the proceeds will benefit the Friends of Allegany County Arc.
