The Alfred State community has rallied in support of first-year student Derek Correa. Correa was brutally attacked by four outsiders who were quickly arrested by University Police. While this first-year student is now hospitalized, students, faculty, staff, and community members are sending warm wishes and thoughtful signs of support.

“Our community immediately rallied around Derek and will continue to find ways to show our support for him and his family during this difficult time,” stated Alfred State President Dr. Steve Mauro. “The community will stand strong, together, and united against this aberrant and senseless violence. This incident shocked us by its random brutality. As we rally for Derek, I’ve found the Pioneer family to be even more committed to care and watch for one another as safety and security remain top our priorities every day.”

The college has kept in close contact with the Correa family since the attack. On campus, students, faculty, and staff are showing support in multiple ways.

  • A large support banner was signed by hundreds of students to show their support and delivered to Derek
  • His fellow students in his CNC machining class are making a custom gift for Derek’s mom
  • Cards have been coming in, including oversized custom cards, to share with Derek; cards have even been received from other SUNY campuses
  • A spaghetti dinner fund-raiser was organized by culinary arts students. The event will be held on Nov. 16.
  • The new Trap Shooting team will hold a fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 4 at approximately 3 p.m.
  • Video recognition of Derek has been shown on the Pioneer Stadium scoreboard prior to the start of athletic events along with a silent moment of hope and encouragement.

The college maintains a webpage regarding support efforts and details regarding campus safety.  Others  can join our many faculty, staff, students, retirees, alumni, and parents that have made their presence felt via the family’s GoFundMe page where updates on Derek’s condition are provided.
