Dr. John M. AndersonDr. John M. Anderson, president, Alfred State College, has been named to the AASCU (American Association of State Colleges and Universities) Committee on Economic and Work Force Development (CEWD), whose mission is to help AASCU institutions enhance the scope and visibility of economic and work force development efforts in partnership with their communities and regions. The term of the appointment continues for a three-year period until October 2012.

The group will conduct an organizational session during the annual meeting of AASCU this month under the leadership of new committee chair, Chancellor Rick Wells, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. The group will set its goals for the coming year and plan how to accomplish this work. Issues could include common challenges campuses face in pushing economic and work force development initiatives forward; priorities for CEWD in light of these challenges; AASCU’s economic and work force development initiatives; and building on the momentum from this meeting to share information, collaborate, and partner.

Committee appointments are made based on the preferences expressed by member presidents and chancellors.

“President Anderson had indicated this was his first choice of assignment and we're pleased that he is interested in being involved in AASCU's work at the national level,” noted Christina Bitting, vice president for membership services of AASCU.

Anderson, who was named president of Alfred State College in 2008, previously served as executive vice president and provost at Hartwick College, Oneonta.

Prior to that appointment, Anderson spent many years at Alfred State, (1981-2003), where he held several positions prior to his appointment as ASC provost and academic vice president, including vice president for institutional advancement, dean of student development, and vice president for student services. Between 1975 and 1991, Anderson held several teaching and academic posts at Alfred State, SUNY Brockport, SUNY Geneseo, and two area high schools. Over the years, he has worked as a consultant for several entities, including the Middle States Association, NYS Department of Education, and the SUNY Delegation to Turkey.

A true product of the SUNY System, Anderson holds a PhD in education from Cornell University, an MA in physics from SUNY Geneseo, a BA in physics from SUNY Brockport, and an AS in math and science from Westchester Community College. He also received post-graduate education at Harvard University, University at Buffalo, and Alfred University.
