The Alfred State College men's track and field continued to hold on to its lead in the Region III Championships on Saturday at Cornell University. The men now have 138 points after two days of competition and lead by 59 points.
The Alfred State College men's track and field continued to hold on to its lead in the Region III Championships on Saturday at Cornell University. The men now have 138 points after two days of competition and lead by 59 points.
Schuyler Duross (Johnstown) won the heptathlon with a new school record 4,132 points. Kurtis Breese (Duke Center, PA) finished 3rd with 3,617 points. Each athlete had solid second days of competition to move up in the standings.
Corey Smith (Wallkill) finished 3rd in the 5,000 (16:50) and John Sweeney (Barker) was 4th (16:55).
Trailing ASC's 138 points is Erie CC with 79 points, Delhi with 44 points, and Mohawk Valley CC with 3 points.
In other non-region events at Cornell, David Gross (Brockport) set a new personal and school record with a toss of 51'2" in the weight throw. Dan Reynolds (Wayland Cohocton) had a strong performance finishing 5th in the pole vault (14'9.25").
On the women's side of action, Emily Johns (Bath) was 3rd in the pentathlon. She accumulated 2,179 points in the event. Allyne O'Hearn (Pelham, NH/Hornell) finished 5th in the 5,000 (21:27.37).
Erie CC leads the Region III Championships with 86 points followed by Mohawk Valley (70), and Alfred State (44). Delhi has 13 points.
The Pioneers will return to action next weekend back at Cornell University where the remainder of the Region III Championship will be competed. The Denault Invitational is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
