Tomm & TyrellAlfred State College honored more than 250 students for their academic success and honored distinguished faculty members for excellence and commitment at its annual Honors Convocation.  Chosen this year for the Freshman Advocate of the Year Award, presented at the ceremony, and sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs, was Debra Tomm, of Alfred Station, a keyboard specialist in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The award is presented to the employee at Alfred State College who had a most positive influence on a student's freshman year at the College.  Tomm was cited by her nominator Katy Mormino, Alfred, liberal arts and sciences: social science, as "a staff member whom students can turn to for assistance, whether it is in regard to an academic concern or a personal problem.

"Starting college was rough for me. First thing to happen was a problem with my schedule. Deb went out of her way to not only correct the problem, but also make sure I was comfortable and had the right courses.

"She also encouraged me to submit my poems to ERGO and now I am on my way to becoming the co-editor of this publication.

"Still to this day, she is always there with an open door to listen to me when I have problems or just to talk."

Announcement of the award was made by Dr. Steven J. Tyrell, vice president for student affairs.
