Alfred State College recently held a World Down Syndrome Awareness Day event to join with others around the globe in advocating for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of people with Down syndrome.

The event was held in person on March 19 in the Student Leadership Center and virtually through Microsoft Teams. Participants were asked to wear blue and yellow – the colors representing Down syndrome.

Invisible disabilities advocate Christina Irene served as the guest speaker for the event and discussed the importance of equal treatment of those with Down syndrome. Following Irene’s remarks, Alfred State hosted a Kahoot trivia game to quiz those in attendance, with the winner receiving a $100 Amazon gift card.

Event organizer Hannah Snayczuk, a human services management student from Machias, was encouraged by how well the event was received and hopes for an even greater turn out next year.
