The Nursing Department at Alfred State College (ASC) would like to recognize and thank the healthcare facilities who continued to support the department and its students this past semester, especially in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

During the fall 2020 semester, several healthcare facilities provided valuable clinical experiences to ASC nursing students, including: Olean General Hospital (Olean), Jones Memorial Hospital (Wellsville), Cuba Memorial Hospital (Cuba), Highland Rehabilitation Center (Wellsville), Steuben Centers (Bath), St. James Hospital (Hornell), Guthrie Hospital (Corning), Noyes Hospital (Dansville), and Unity Hospital (Rochester).

To show their gratitude to these facilities and their employees, students from the Hope for Health Club created and sent thank-you letters. Led by Assistant Professor Tara Histed and Lecturer Jennifer Ross as faculty advisers and Jessica Sedore as club president, the Hope for Health Club provides health-related services to the local, national, and global community.

Sedore, a nursing student from Holley, said her experience at St. James Hospital gave her so much hope for the future. She added that the staff was wonderful and allowed her to see and do so much in just one day.

“A day of rotations at St. James gave me a much better idea of the role of a nurse in each unit and reminded me why I am doing this,” she said. “Thank you for making this possible for us. I admire you all so much! Stay safe and thank you for all you do!”

Hanna Waterman, a nursing student from Holley and a member of the Hope for Health Club, said, “Thank you so much for allowing our group to get clinical hours, especially throughout all of this. We appreciate you taking us in and getting a great experience at the different units. The staff were very helpful and ensured that we saw as much as possible. Thank you so much!”

ASC nursing faculty and staff also expressed their appreciation for these facilities and their employees. Speaking about Olean General Hospital, Associate Professor Laurie Dunn noted that the clinical students and faculty at Alfred State College appreciate what the facility has to offer.

“The units and rotations provide a variety of positive learning opportunities,” Dunn said. “We appreciate the support and guidance from nurses, administration, providers, and medical staff. Thank you for this ongoing opportunity.”

Jennifer Guthrie, an instructional support associate in the ASC Nursing Department, said. “Thank you so much to the facilities, skilled nursing, and acute care workers, for allowing our students to have a clinical experience this semester. Despite all of the barriers, our students were welcomed into your facilities to learn from you and experience the high degree of dedication, professionalism, and compassion that characterize the nursing profession. You are our partners in nursing education, and we could not do it without you.”
